Costa Mesa’s Luxembourger Chooses Villanova

Costa Mesa’s Bryan Luxembourger has orally committed to play football at Villanova.

Luxembourger was an offensive lineman/linebacker for the Mustangs, who won the Pacific Coast League championship and reached the Southern Section Division VIII title game. He was named second-team All-Orange County by The Times.

A room at the inn: Mater Dei basketball Coach Gary McKnight and family are going to get to spend Christmas at home--something that was in doubt a couple of weeks ago.

A leak left nine inches of water in the McKnight home, sending them to a hotel for five weeks. It got a little rough.

The family took two rooms. Gary and his wife, Judy, stayed in one and their five kids in the other.

Needless to say, there were hardships.

Clay McKnight, a junior at Mater Dei, went through video-game withdrawal, according to Judy McKnight.

“He kept saying, ‘I need my Hardbodies,’ ” Judy McKnight said.

The family moved home Friday, not a moment too soon.

“The people in the hotel bar were starting to call me ‘Norm,’ ” Gary McKnight said.

A Starr is born: Orange basketball Coach Richard Bossenmeyer is “Ringo” to his close friends, a nickname that dates to before his birth.

Bossenmeyer is the youngest of six children. He has four sisters and one brother, who is the oldest of the children.

“My brother made a deal with my mother that if they had another boy, he would get to pick the name,” Bossenmeyer said. “He was a big Beatles fan.”

So Ringo (Starr) Paul (McCartney) Bossenmeyer was born.

“My mom wasn’t about to have a son named Ringo,” Bossenmeyer said.

So he became Richard, which is Ringo Starr’s real first name.
