Loyola Loses in Overtime, 92-91

Loyola Marymount’s inability to rebound in key situations has hurt the Lions on numerous occasions in the past two seasons, but never more than Monday night.

Fairfield forward Shannon Bowman grabbed an offensive rebound and made a short jump shot with three seconds left in overtime to give the Stags a 92-91 victory at Gersten Pavilion.

It was perhaps the most bitter defeat in Loyola’s 19-game losing streak. The Lions (0-9) blew an 83-78 lead in the final 33 seconds of regulation, then failed to box out on the defensive end after Bill Mazurie had given the Lions a 91-90 lead on two free throws with 16 seconds left in overtime.

After Fairfield (3-4) brought the ball up court, guard Craig Martin drove the baseline and put up a driving shot that hit the front of the rim, bounced over the basket and into the hands of Bowman, who put the ball back in.

Wyking Jones led Loyola with 19 points. Mazurie, who scored all seven of the Lions’ points in overtime, scored 12, as did freshman forward Mike O’Quinn.

Fairfield’s Martin led all scorers with 26 points, including five three-point shots.
