GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Edges No. 6 Ocean View

A fine line marks the difference between a very good team and a champion. Tuesday night at Ocean View High, that difference was two points.

Ninth-ranked Marina, which has won or shared three consecutive Sunset League titles, scored a 47-45 victory over sixth-ranked Ocean View, one of four Sunset teams among the county’s top 10.

“I hope the girls realize how tough it is to win championships and how hard you have to go after it,” Seahawk Coach Ollie Martin said. “They know how to play pretty well and they understand the game, but it’s understanding the nature of competition.”

That was the edge Marina (8-4, 1-0) held as it bolted from a 32-32 tie opening the fourth quarter to take a nine-point lead with 4 minutes 2 seconds left. It was part of an 11-point run against an Ocean View team (9-3, 0-1) that committed 22 turnovers and got off only eight shots in the third quarter.

The biggest shot of the night, Shandy Robbins’ three-pointer as time on the shot clock expired, made it 37-32 with 5:01 to go. “The most important (three-pointer) I’ve ever made,” Robbins said.

Robbins had a huge game under adverse conditions. She picked up her third foul with 3:04 left in the second quarter, but was around to block Alison Juroe’s shot from two feet with four seconds left to prevent overtime.

“I was just hoping they wouldn’t call a foul,” Robbins said. “I don’t even know why I went up for that block--I guess it was instinct.”

Robbins finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

A three-point basket by Jennifer Tuiolosega (seven points) and a three-point play by Farrah Magee (seven points) helped Ocean View cut a six-point deficit to two in the final 1:42.

Martita Emde had 16 points for the Vikings, and Sonya Bryant had 12 points and six steals.
