Barons Hold Marina to Tie

Fountain Valley’s Sheri Simala made 19 saves, leading a strong defensive effort that allowed the Barons to post a 0-0 tie with top-ranked Marina in Sunset League girls’ soccer at Fountain Valley.

It was the first failure to win for Marina (15-0-1, 2-0-1), which is ranked No. 1 in the state. Fountain Valley is 8-5-2, 2-0-1.

In other Sunset League girls’ soccer games:

Edison 6, Westminster 1--Shauna Itri and Christine Tyler each had two goals to lead Edison (13-2-2, 3-0).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ soccer:

Laguna Hills 4, Laguna Beach 0--Nicole Restivo scored two goals and Sarah Lang had four saves for her 10th shutout for Laguna Hills (10-3-3, 1-0).

Costa Mesa 1, Estancia 1--Tesea Brown scored for Costa Mesa (5-1-3) and Tracie Manz for Estancia (6-4-3).

In the Estancia wrestling tournament:

Irvine wins--Eight Irvine wrestlers finished with medals to lead Irvine (163) to the tournament championship. Baldwin Park finished second with 148 points.

Justin Meier led the Vaqueros, finishing second at 130 pounds. Lambert Lo finished third at 130 pounds, and Alan Rush finished third at 145 pounds.

In the Orange County Invitational field hockey tournament:

Edison earns top seeding--Edison took the top spot for next weekend’s quarterfinals by defeating Bonita, 3-1, Marina, 1-0, and host Fountain Valley, 1-0. Jennifer Craig had two goals for Edison, and Lara Lundquist made eight saves.

The two-week tournament will conclude Saturday. The pairings: No. 1 Edison vs. Marina; No. 2 Glendora vs. Huntington Beach; No. 3 Fountain Valley vs. Bonita; No. 4 Santiago vs. Newport Harbor.
