GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Regroups, Defeats No. 9 Marina in Overtime

Fountain Valley Coach Carol Strausberg didn’t call her team’s game Saturday against Marina do-or-die, but did admit that after her fifth-ranked Barons were upset last week, a second consecutive loss would be almost like having one foot in the grave.

The Barons won in overtime, 44-41, over ninth-ranked Marina (9-5, 2-1 in league) in a key Sunset League matchup.

“With two losses in a row, it would be hard to come back from,” Strausberg said. “I thought we played with composure to beat them again.”

Fountain Valley (10-4, 2-1) beat the Vikings by two points in the Marina tournament en route to the title, but after Marina took a 30-25 lead to open the third quarter, it appeared the Vikings were in control. They weren’t. Six turnovers and an 11-1 run by the Barons followed. Only Norie Nakase’s three-point basket with 1 minute 15 seconds left and Shandy Robbins’ turnaround jumper amid three defenders with 19 seconds to go prevented Fountain Valley from winning in regulation.
