PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Early Goals Hold Up for Marina

Share

Shaking off a disappointing scoreless tie with Fountain Valley on Saturday, Marina scored twice in the first half and defeated Edison, 2-0, in a Sunset League girls’ soccer game Tuesday at Edison High.

Freshman midfielder Megan Orach teamed with Cassie Campbell on a breakaway and scored her eighth goal of the season off the top crossbar for the top-ranked Vikings (16-0-1, 3-0-1).

Marina, the defending league champion, added to its lead with three minutes left in the first half when Jenny Benson dribbled past two Charger defenders and centered the ball to a group of teammates. Rhiannon Tanaka got to the ball first and headed it past Edison goalkeeper Jocelyn Polen.

Second-ranked Edison (13-2-2, 3-1 in league) pressured Marina in the second half, but Carrie Florigan, who has not been scored on this season, stopped each attempt.

“It was a real physical game,” Marina Coach Bobby Bruch said. “There was a lot of pushing, shoving and bumping, which is not the style we’d like to play.”
