HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hart Fades but Doesn’t Fall

Hart High made only three field goals in the final three quarters but held on to defeat Burbank, 44-37, Tuesday night in a Foothill League game at Burbank.

Hart (18-1, 5-0), the top-ranked team in the region, raced to a 21-7 lead after one quarter, but Burbank (7-9, 1-4) chipped away and trimmed the margin to 42-36 with 2:30 to play.

Hart forward Brian Ballew, who scored 20 points, made all 10 of his free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Indians in front.

Brad Warner scored 10 points for Burbank.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Canyon 60, Saugus 51--Greg Minor scored 25 points and Charles Woodard added 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cowboys (14-5, 4-1) in a Foothill League game.

R.J. Hayes led Saugus (2-3 in league play) with 13 points and John Dell added 12.

The Cowboys went on a 12-0 run midway through the third quarter, sparked by three-point baskets from Minor and James Manning.

L.A Baptist 53, Maranatha 44--Landon LaPack scored 16 points to lead the Knights (11-3) in an Alpha League opener against Maranatha (11-2) at L.A. Baptist.

Village Christian 77, Marshall Fundamental 49--David Gustafson and Chad Hanson each scored 18 points for host Village Christian in the Alpha League opener.

Kiko Banos added 15 points for the Crusaders (10-7).

Santa Clara 46, Moorpark 35--Damain Cantrell scored 20 points to lead Santa Clara (9-7) in a Frontier League opener.

Nordhoff 67, Santa Paula 54--Mark Sebek scored 25 points and Snow Talifero added 24 for Nordhoff (4-10, 1-1) in a Frontier League game. Nordhoff lost to Santa Paula by 16 in December.

Otis Anderson and Manuel Escamilla each scored 16 points for Santa Paula and Chris Cannon added 12 points.

Muir 77, Crescenta Valley 54--Brock Jacobsen’s 21 points and 10 rebounds could not prevent Crescenta Valley from losing a Pacific League game in Pasadena.

Blake Jacobson added 13 points for the Falcons (10-6, 0-2).

Palmdale 66, Quartz Hill 40--The Falcons jumped to a 33-14 halftime lead in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill. Rocque Sandoval and Maurice Wright each scored 11 points for Palmdale (12-3, 6-0). Mike Hamelin and Al Lairson each added 10.

Aaron Brown had 15 points and nine rebounds for Quartz Hill (1-11, 0-6).

Littlerock 59, Highland 55--James Jefferson made four of four free throws in the final minute to preserve the Golden League victory for the host Lobos (6-8, 2-4).

John George had 21 points for Littlerock.

Paraclete 73, Silver Valley 70--Paraclete’s John Birk hit a follow-up jumper at the buzzer to send the High Desert League game into overtime and the Spirits (4-8, 1-1) went on to upset Silver Valley (11-3, 1-2).

Paraclete trailed by 13 with 3:09 remaining in regulation. Ruffin Crozat scored 20 points for Paraclete, followed by Andy Fullerton (14), Birk (13), Brendan Carberry (12) and Steve Dombrowsky (12).

First Lutheran 71, L.A. Lutheran 48--Forwards Jamahl Law and James Griffin combined for 36 points and 29 rebounds to lead the visiting Falcons (7-3, 2-1) to a Heritage League victory.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Buena 89, Hueneme 23--All five starters scored in double figures as the Bulldogs (9-1, 3-0) rolled in a Channel League game.

Laura Dahl led all scorers with 17 points and seven rebounds. Mikko Giordano added 16 points, Edoni Conley and Kara Newman each scored 14 and Kori Sebek contributed 10.

Thousand Oaks 52, Newbury Park 48--Alissa Corey and Jenn Detmer each scored 12 points to lead the Lancers to a Marmonte League overtime victory at Thousand Oaks.

Newbury Park’s Jan Thorpe, who scored 11 points, scored with six seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Corey scored early in the overtime to put the Lancers (12-4, 4-1) ahead for good. Teammate Nicole Woodruff added 11 points.

Hart 56, Burbank 31--Schandra Neal scored 11 points and LaCresha Clark added eight assists for Hart (13-6, 5-0) in the Foothill League game. Jocelyn Ferialdi scored 15 for Burbank.

Glendale 36, Pasadena 35--Ida Aghajanian came off the bench and sank two free throws for an injured Arely Zimmerman with 38 seconds left to lift Glendale (7-7, 1-1) to a Pacific League victory.

Zimmerman was fouled on a layup and injured. Aghajanian replaced her and sank both free throws.

Eagle Rock 46, Verdugo Hills 45--Yammir Carbonell hit a short jumper with 15 seconds remaining for Eagle Rock in a Northern Conference game. Verdugo Hills trailed by 16 with six minutes remaining, but Aracelly Gutierrez scored 10 of her 23 points in the final quarter.

Royal 64, Simi Valley 54--Sophomore Tawnee Cooper had 29 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and five assists for host Royal (9-3, 2-2) in a Marmonte League game.

L.A. Baptist 45, Maranatha 31--Lori Neville, Deanna Bergeson and Darcie Frazier each scored 10 points to lead the Knights (6-7) in an Alpha League opener at home.

Bellarmine-Jefferson 55, St. Monica 33--Christina Ticsay scored 20 points and Carrie Breedlove added eight points and 14 rebounds to lead the host Guards (11-3, 3-0) to a Camino Real League victory.

Oak Park 60, Carpinteria 46--Juniors Alexa and Alisha Valavanis combined for 34 points to lead the host Eagles (11-4) in their Tri-Valley League opener.

Notre Dame 63, Louisville 49--Maggie Dixon had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights (9-5, 2-1) to a Mission League victory.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burbank 2, Hart 0--Senior Santiago Tovar scored his seventh goal of the season in the Bulldogs’ Foothill League victory.

Jose Oliva also scored for Burbank (5-5-3, 2-2-1). Carlos Gutierrez stopped nine shots to record his second shutout.

Marshall Fundamental 2, Village Christian 2--Ignacio Braca’s second-half goals gave the Crusaders (4-6-1) a tie in an Alpha League opener. Manuk Margaryan scored the Eagles’ goals.

Maranatha 3, LA Baptist 0--Dustin Stamp’s 14 saves weren’t enough for the host Knights (2-10) in an Alpha League opener.

Moorpark 4, Santa Clara 1--Brody Trejos scored two goals to lead the Musketeers (17-2, 2-0) to a Frontier League victory.
