PREP ROUNDUP : Irvine Dominates Tustin in Dual Wrestling Meet

Irvine, the fourth-ranked team in Orange County, beat Tustin, 59-7, in a Sea View League wrestling meet Tuesday at Tustin.

Steve Ruiz (160 pounds) had the most dramatic victory for Irvine (12-2-1, 5-0-1 in league). He and Shawn Ghotbi were tied, 13-13, at the end of regulation and went into overtime. Ruiz got a takedown and pin 15 seconds into overtime.

Peter Hamilton scored the first of five pins for Irvine. He pinned Steve Smith in 41 seconds of their match at 112 pounds.

In Olympic League boys’ basketball:

Whittier Christian 64, Brethren Christian 50--Whittier Christian (16-2, 7-0) extended it league lead to three games over defending champion Brethren Christian (12-7, 4-3). Tyler Ream had 21 points for the Heralds.

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 109, South Gate Southeast Lutheran 27--Bryan Avery had a school-record 18 assists as seven Minutemen scored in double figures. Dave Vaccaro scored 26 points and Bob McClung 22 for Liberty Christian (8-10, 3-1), which led, 58-6, at the half.

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 71, California School for the Deaf Riverside 57--Josh Cameron scored 24 points, Brent Pike added 17 and Bret Lautt had 16 for Southern California Christian (5-10, 4-1).

In Sunset League field hockey:

Santiago 1, Newport Harbor 1--Mara Colaizzi’s second-half goal tied the score for second-place Newport Harbor (5-3-3 in league).
