Foothill League Reduces Winter Sports Schedules by One-Third

The Foothill League voted Tuesday to reduce its regular season by one third in all winter sports because of extensive damage to facilities in the Santa Clarita Valley caused by last week’s earthquake.

Instead of a 12-game league schedule, teams will now play eight. In addition, league play will be limited to once a week on the next three Saturdays.

The schedule for boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ soccer follows:

* Jan. 29: Burbank vs. Saugus. Hart vs. Burroughs. Canyon has a bye.

* Feb. 5: Hart vs. Saugus. Burroughs vs. Canyon. Burbank has a bye.

* Feb. 12: Hart vs. Canyon.

Volleyball

Cal State Northridge’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match scheduled tonight at UC Irvine has been postponed indefinitely to accommodate the Matadors’ men’s team, which is still recovering from last week’s earthquake.

Basketball

The Chaminade-Notre Dame game postponed because of the earthquake last week has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at Chaminade.

Campbell Hall has rescheduled two home games postponed because of the earthquake. A game against Crossroads scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to Feb. 3. Last Saturday’s game against Pacific Hills will be played Feb. 12.

Two of tonight’s Western State Conference men’s games and two women’s games have been moved to neutral sites because of earthquake-related damage to gyms.

The Oxnard-Moorpark men’s game will be played at Cal Lutheran and the women’s game will be played at Westlake High. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Valley men’s and women’s teams will play host to Santa Monica at Notre Dame High. The women’s game will begin at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men’s game.

Baseball

The Cal State Northridge baseball team’s home games scheduled for Feb. 5-6 have been moved to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, creating a season-opening, three-game series on the road. Northridge opens Feb. 4 at San Luis Obispo.

Golf

The Eighth Annual Corey Pavin Taco Bell Golf Classic is scheduled for Feb. 7 at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

The charity fund-raiser, which benefits the Big Brothers and Big Sisters programs in Ventura County, will be hosted by Pavin, a 1977 Oxnard High graduate who plays on the PGA Tour.

Scott Golditch of Northridge won his second ESPN Junior Ping tournament in as many tries earlier this month in suburban Houston. Golditch, a Taft High senior, fired two rounds of 77 to win the tournament at The Woodlands North Course.

Tennis

Petra Gaspar of Hungary defeated Meilen Tu of Northridge, 6-4, 6-2, in the third round of the girls’ division at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Miscellany

Fr. Bill Wert has been named interim athletic director at Crespi, replacing Paul Muff, who died last week. Wert will serve as athletic director through June.
