POLICE BLOTTER : Around the Valley . . .

ALHAMBRA: Five suspects were arrested at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of Midvale Avenue after a resident witnessed them stealing stereo equipment from a car.

ARCADIA: A 27-year-old man tried to set ablaze his grandmother’s four-door sedan after she refused to lend him the vehicle Saturday afternoon, police said. Glen Haft of Arcadia tried to borrow the car parked in the 2300 block of South Fifth Avenue at about 3:30 p.m., but when his grandmother refused to give him the keys, he stuffed a rag into the gas tank and lit it, police said. Haft was arrested and is still in custody on charges of of burglary and arson. His grandmother extinguished the fire before it damaged the car.

BALDWIN PARK: Over a dozen rifle rounds were fired into a house at 13518 Rockway St. about 3:45 a.m. Monday. Mario Espinoza, 22, of Baldwin Park, was hit in the shin but not wounded seriously. No arrests have been made.

INDUSTRY: $10 was stolen from an unattended vehicle parked in the 17600 block of Gale Avenue at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

MONTEREY PARK: Police will set up a sobriety checkpoint Friday. The checkpoint will be established after dark at an undisclosed location in the city.

MONROVIA: Two carjackings were reported to Monrovia police over the weekend. The first occurred in the 400 block of East Olive Avenue about 9 p.m. Saturday after a man pretending to have a weapon in his pocket stopped and stole a white 1980 Audi, Police Sgt. Rick Miglia said. The Audi was recovered Sunday at 2:23 p.m. about four blocks from the scene of the crime. The car stereo was stolen. The second carjacking occurred at 2:08 Monday morning in the 500 block of South Ivy Avenue and involved two men pretending to have weapons in their pockets and then making off with a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Miglia said. No arrests have been made.

POMONA: A 15-year-old Pomona youth was shot in the hand and neck as he walked home Friday afternoon. Four men in a car pulled up next to the youth and his friends as they were walking near the 2100 block of South Towne Avenue. No arrests have been made.

WALNUT: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and county Children’s Services workers rescued a 4-month-old boy born addicted to cocaine after his 16-year-old mother allegedly snatched him from his Walnut foster home. A neighbor jotted down the license plate of the car in which the mother arrived, enabling authorities to track the baby down in Long Beach. Authorities had to act quickly because the baby, who also has epilepsy, needed medication. The mother and three alleged accomplices were arrested.
