This week’s round-robin boys’ basketball tournament in the North Valley League has been moved from El Camino Real High because of rain damage to the school gym.

Instead, games are scheduled to be played at San Fernando High on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. El Camino Real, Granada Hills, Reseda and San Fernando are participating.

Larry McDermott, a former Moorpark High softball coach who filed a grievance with the Moorpark Unified School District after being fired following the 1993 season, was offered reinstatement of his coaching position but declined the offer, district Supt. Thomas Duffy announced Monday.

McDermott said he filed the grievance because he felt the firing was unwarranted and cast a disparaging shadow on his reputation. “I wanted to clear my name,” McDermott said. “I wanted everyone to know that there wasn’t a justifiable reason for the dismissal last year.”

McDermott, who was fired for undisclosed reasons, guided Moorpark to a 23-5-1 record and a runner-up finish to La Reina in the Southern Section 1-A Division final in 1992. The Musketeers lost in the second round of the playoffs last season and finished 18-7.

Tom Humphreys was named to replace McDermott, who coached the softball team the past seven seasons. McDermott cited a desire to pursue other professional and personal interests for declining to be reinstated.

“I’m glad that this chapter is finally over,” said McDermott, who plans to coach a Thousand Oaks youth baseball team in the spring.

“I wish it wouldn’t have happened. I would have liked to leave the program under different circumstances.”
