Lian Kang Lu, Cal State Northridge’s new women’s volleyball coach, completed his staff on Wednesday, announcing the hiring of assistants Carolyn Hueth and Maria Reyes-Sanchez.

Hueth, 23, Lu’s top assistant, was an assistant coach at Mira Costa High the past two seasons. She was a four-year starter at Pepperdine, a three-time team captain and the West Coast Conference player of the year in 1991.

Reyes-Sanchez, 24, was team captain at UC Santa Barbara in 1990-91 when Lu was an assistant coach there.

Football

Northridge’s football recruiting class reached six on Wednesday when Coach Bob Burt announced that Virgil Nelson and Anthony Fernandez, defensive linemen from Citrus College, have signed NCAA letters of intent.

Nelson, 6-2, 250, is expected to play defensive end.

Fernandez, 6-4, 257, will play tackle.

“They give us solid depth at that position,” Burt said. “They’re solid, mature-type people.”

The Matadors have defensive line starters Oscar Wilson, Chris Smith and Tim Gardner returning next fall.
