COLLEGE ROUNDUP : 5 Canyons Players Score in Double Figures in 86-81 Playoff Win

Gene Barshtak scored on a layup with 30 seconds remaining for the go-ahead basket and College of the Canyons held on for an 86-81 victory over San Diego Mesa on Friday night at Canyons in the first round of the junior college Southern regional.

Jagos Medenica followed with a basket to put the Cougars ahead by three, and San Diego Mesa then missed five shots, including two three-point attempts.

Medenica finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, one of five Canyons players scoring in double figures.

Randy Eason, Kwesi Fulton and Medenica each scored 16, and teammate Alric Gillett had 12 assists for the Cougars (15-16). Barshtak had 10 points.

Don Collins scored 31 points for San Diego Mesa (15-14).

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 2, La Verne 0--Sam Arroyo pitched a three-hitter and Mike Shwartzer hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to lead the Kingsmen in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Thousand Oaks.

Cal Lutheran (8-2-1, 7-0 in conference play) moved a game ahead of La Verne.

The Kingsmen outhit the Leopards, 8-3, but left eight runners on base and hit into five double plays.

Kirk Fellows was two for three for Cal Lutheran, which plays a doubleheader at La Verne today.

Pierce 9, San Diego City 6--Cesar Martinez had four hits and scored three runs, and Lou Tapia had three hits and four runs batted for Pierce in a nonconference game in San Diego.

Trailing, 5-2, after three innings, Pierce (3-5) tied the score in the fourth on a bases-loaded double by Tapia.

The Brahmas took a 7-5 lead in the sixth when Martinez singled with two out, stole second and scored on Brian Sturges’ double. Sturges scored on a single by Tapia.

Ricky Staves (1-0) won in relief of Jason Warren. Staves entered the game with two out in the third, the bases loaded and Pierce trailing, 5-2. He retired the first batter he faced and allowed four hits and a run in 4 1/3 innings.

Ventura 5, Southwestern 5--The Pirates advanced to the quarter--finals of the San Bernardino tournament by outhitting Southwestern, 10-6.

The game was called after nine innings because of a three-hour time limit. Hernan Martinez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score, 5-5. Robert Fick was four for five for Ventura (6-2).

East L.A. 8, Canyons 6 (10 innings)--Fernando Pina went four for five and drove in six runs as East L.A. pulled out the nonconference victory at Canyons.

The Cougars (4-3) led, 4-0, after the second inning. Pina had a double and a home run among four hits. Tommy Nichols of Canyons had two hits and two RBIs.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Moorpark 103, Santa Barbara City 41, Cuesta 36--Isaiah Mustafa won four events, placed second in two others and ran the third leg on the victorious 400-meter relay team to lead Moorpark to victory in the Western State Conference meet at Santa Barbara.

Mustafa won the 100 meters (10.9 seconds), 200 (22.8), 110 high hurdles (15.4) and long jump (22 feet 4 1/2 inches). He added second-place finishes in the high jump (6-6) and triple jump (42-3 1/4) as Moorpark (2-0, 2-0) opened defense of its WSC title.

Sean McKeown won the shotput (47-9) and discus (154-6).

His personal best in the discus moved him to second on the all-time Moorpark list.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Moorpark 86, Cuesta 42, Santa Barbara City 30--Jodi Runyan and Kim Gerhard each won two events to lead Moorpark at Santa Barbara.

Runyan ran 71.8 in the 400-meter hurdles and bounded 31-10 3/4 in the triple jump. Gerhard timed 5:11.7 in the 1,500 meters and 11:22.6 in the 3,000.

Tami Vaillancourt threw a personal best 124-3 to win the discus and move to second on Moorpark’s all-time list.
