PREP BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Crescenta Valley Upsets Santa Ana Valley, 69-67

Crescenta Valley High pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the boys’ basketball playoffs with a 69-67 victory over The Times’ No. 16-ranked team, Santa Ana Valley, in a Southern Section Division I-AA semifinal game Saturday night at Glendale High.

Crescenta Valley (19-9) outrebounded fourth-seeded Santa Ana Valley, 36-11. Blake Jacobson led the way with 13 rebounds, despite being called for his third foul early in the second quarter. He added 18 points.

The Falcons will play Long Beach Poly for the championship Saturday night at Anaheim Arena.

No. 10 Long Beach Poly 61, Long Beach Wilson 43--In a game between Moore League foes, Poly (24-6) won for the third time over Wilson (22-8), this time in the Southern Section Division I-AA semifinals Saturday night.

At Long Beach City College, Damion Dawson scored 16 points and James Brown added 13 for Poly.

GIRLS

No. 3 Mission Hills Alemany 67, Hacienda Heights Los Altos 32--Zevette Mitchell scored 16 points and Kelly McKay had 10 steals to lead Alemany (26-0) over Los Altos (18-11) in II-A quarterfinal at La Canada St. Francis High.

No. 4 Ventura Buena 61, San Clemente 34--Mikko Giordano scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead top-seeded Buena (23-2) over San Clemente (21-6) in a I-A semifinal at Oxnard Rio Mesa High. Michelle Macintyre led San Clemente with 14 points.

No. 6 Palos Verdes Peninsula 60, San Gabriel 38--Mimi McKinney scored 20 points and had seven rebounds to lead Peninsula (24-3) over San Gabriel (22-5) in a I-AA semifinal at South Torrance High.

Newport Harbor 43, No. 16 Newbury Park 41--Gina Heads made two free throws with 12 seconds to play to lift Newport Harbor (22-6) in a III--AA semifinal at Camarillo High.

Heads, who had made only two of seven free throws before the fourth quarter, tied the game, 41-41, with a foul shot with 2:38 to play.

Newbury Park finished 23-5.
