SEASON AT A GLANCE: Since finishing a disappointing second in the high jump at 6 feet 8 inches in the Sunkist Invitational indoor meet last month, Fischer has been on a tear. He cleared a then-personal best of 7-3 on March 2 and followed that with a second-place mark of 7-2 in the National Scholastic indoor championships in Syracuse, N.Y., on March 13. On Saturday, he raised his best to 7-4 to win the Santa Barbara Easter Relays at Santa Barbara City College.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: With his 7-4 effort, Fischer added an inch to his Ventura County record and surpassed the region record of 7-3 1/4 set by Lee Balkin of Glendale in 1979. It also moved him into a tie for eighth on the all-time U.S. high school outdoor list and ranks second on the all-time state list. The state record of 7-4 1/2 and the national high school record of 7-6 appear to be within Fischer’s reach, but the Wisconsin-bound jumper says he isn’t obsessed with his standing on the all-time lists. “I don’t really worry about lists or things like that,” he said. “I’m happy because I’m jumping high consistently and I’m jumping well in the big meets. That’s what is most important to me.”
