HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Kramer Helps Self in a Royal Romp

Maki Kramer had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice while improving his record to 5-0 as Royal High defeated Westlake, 11-4, in a Marmonte League baseball game Wednesday at Royal.

Kramer, a senior right-hander, gave up two runs--one earned--in five innings. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked three.

He and teammate Brian Fernandez (two runs scored) each went three for three as the Highlanders (7-3, 3-1 in league play) collected for 13 hits off three Warrior pitchers.

Adrian Mendoza was two for four with two RBIs and Joel Mellinger was two for four and scored twice for Royal, which scored all its runs in the first three innings.

Montclair Prep 10, Moorpark 9--The Mounties rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take third place at the Babe Herman tournament and avenge a 19-6 loss to Moorpark two weeks ago.

Andrew Miller and Darrell Dent each had two hits and two RBIs for Montclair Prep (9-4). Jason Adamson hit two home runs and drove in four runs for Moorpark (10-3).

Notre Dame 6, Cantwell 2--Andy Lutz (3-0) scattered five hits over six innings and Joey Orlando had three hits, including a double, for Notre Dame (11-3), which finished fifth in the St. Paul tournament.

Warren 8, L.A. Baptist 6--Matt Hernandez’s 15-game winning streak was snapped in the fifth-place game of the Gladstone tournament. Hernandez (4-1) suffered his first loss since 1992.

Knight outfielder Dave Laufer was two for three with a run scored and was named to the all-tournament team.

Rio Mesa 7, Hart 6--Chad Snyder doubled to score Steve Arneson and Johnny Espinoza with the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning for Rio Mesa in a nonleague game at Hart (8-4).

Arneson had two hits and two RBIs, and Espinoza added three hits and two runs for Rio Mesa (9-4).

Saugus 10, Cajon 9--Saugus (9-4-1) rallied for five runs with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning to take fifth place in the Coachella Valley tournament.

Brandon Hernandez, who went two for three with three RBIs, scored the game-winner by stealing home.

Harvard-Westlake 5-13, Crossroads 3-9--Dan Mason had two hits and two RBIs, and Andy Gadt added two hits for Harvard-Westlake in the second game of a nonleague sweep at Crossroads. Mason had three hits and two RBIs in the opener, which went nine innings.

Chaminade 3, Amador Valley 1--Catcher Brandon Gray went two for two with two walks for the Eagles in the championship game of pool play in the Modesto Beyer tournament.

Gray has six consecutive hits in his last two games. Kevin Lohman and John Gunn each added two hits each for Chaminade (9-5).

Gabe Crecion (5-2) struck out nine and allowed four hits in six innings.

Crespi 9, St. Paul 1--Sam Clemons (3-2) threw his third complete game, striking out two and walking none while scattering six hits for Crespi (9-4-1) in the seventh-place Division-A game of the St. Paul tournament.

The Celts scored seven runs on seven hits in the fifth inning, including a two-run double by Jeff Christensen.

St. Genevieve 10, Pius X 7--Alex Muller had three hits as the Valiants scored five times in the seventh inning to win the seventh-place Division-AA game of the St. Paul tournament. Omar Gutierrez (3-1) pitched a complete game for St. Genevieve (7-8).

SOFTBALL

Westlake 1, Thousand Oaks 0--Westlake pitcher Kelly DeArman took matters into her own hands in the ninth inning of a duel with Jessica Davenport.

DeArman (6-4), who struck out 11 while scattering four hits, walked to open the inning. She advanced to third on bunts by Amanda Martin and Erica Elrick, then scored the winning run when the Lancers’ first baseman dropped the throw after Lori Martin’s grounder up the middle.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Taft d. Kennedy, 15-11, 15-13, 15-1--Nima Fariman had 11 kills and Chris Smith added seven digs for Taft in the Northwest Valley Conference match.

Jeff Craven had 26 assists for the Toreadors (7-2, 5-1).

Sylmar d. Grant, 11-15, 15-4, 15-11, 15-10--Edward Terry had 19 kills and Melvin Lemus added 15 as Sylmar came from behind to win the Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Grant.

Matt Garcia added 35 assists for the Spartans (5-3, 3-2).

Canoga Park d. Monroe, 15-9, 15-10, 15-8--Craig Ostad and Sobeck Banuelos each had 10 kills to lead the Hunters in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Sherman Oaks CES d. Reseda, 15-7, 15-11, 12-15, 11-15, 15-7--Arthur Rodgers had 10 kills, Jeff Cannon had seven kills and Kevin Joel added 42 assists for Sherman Oaks CES (1-7, 1-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Poly d. North Hollywood 15-11, 15-8, 15-1--Mark McGlennen had 15 kills to lead the Parrots in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Grant 7, Fairfax 0--Andy Hahn and Daniel Erlikman each scored 6-0, 6-0 shutouts to lead Grant (3-5, 1-0) in its Mid-Valley League opener.

Agoura 9, Thousand Oaks 9--The Lancers won the last two matches of the Marmonte League match at Agoura to tie the score, but Agoura won on the tiebreaker of total games won, 70-66.

It was the second time this season that Agoura (9-2, 4-1) and Thousand Oaks (6-6, 5-1) have tied, 9-9.

Thousand Oaks won the first match on the tiebreaker.
