HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Victory by Royal Has Foreign Flavor

Foreign exchange students Vit Makarius of the Czech Republic and Borgthor Olason of Iceland won a total of five events to power Royal High to a 69 1/2-66 1/2 victory over Thousand Oaks in a Marmonte League boys’ track and field meet Thursday at Thousand Oaks.

Makarius won the 110-meter high hurdles in a personal best of 15.3 seconds to go with victories in the 330-yard intermediates (41.4) and the long jump (20 feet 11 1/4 inches).

Olason placed first in the shotput (personal best of 48-1) and discus (148-1) for the Highlanders (3-0, 3-0 in league meets).

Kevin Marsden (2 minutes 5.9 seconds in the 880), Jeff Fischer (4:28.0 in the mile) and Brandon Del Campo (9:59.5 in the two-mile) led Thousand Oaks to 1-2-3 finishes in the distance races, but Royal countered with victories in five of six field events.

A 1-2 finish in the triple jump by Brandon Gibson (41-4 1/2) and Christian Broussard (41-2 3/4) clinched the victory for the Highlanders in the final event.

BASEBALL

Poly 3, Birmingham 0--Jerry Delgado (3-0) pitched his third complete game in four starts, scattering five hits and turning in a two-for-three performance at the plate for Poly (11-2, 3-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Sammy Vizcarra had a two-run triple for the Parrots in the fourth inning, and scored Poly’s third run moments later on a single by Delgado.

Van Nuys 9, North Hollywood 0--Jesus Bolivar pitched a four-hitter and recorded his first shutout of the season in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood.

Bolivar (3-3) struck out six and walked three for Van Nuys (7-8, 3-1).

Verdugo Hills 5, Belmont 1--Senior right-hander Eric Schmidt pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and doubled twice to lead Verdugo Hills (5-4, 4-0) to a Northern Conference victory. Kevin McCormick added a two-run homer in the fifth.

Grant 7, Canoga Park 0--Marc Scorza pitched a six-hitter and doubled home two runs in the first inning of a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Grant (5-5, 2-2) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Leadoff batter Alex Rose walked and Aaron Amitin followed with a triple.

Kennedy 3, Reseda 2--Senior left fielder Billy Paul tripled home Danny Montes to tie the game, 2-2, in the sixth and Kenny Bernas followed with a groundout to score Paul with the winning run as Kennedy (7-4-1, 2-1) rallied for a Northwest Valley league victory.

Kennedy starter Keith Brydon carried a one-hitter into the sixth before being lifted for sophomore David Soto with the bases loaded, a run in and none out. Soto retired the side with no further damage and went on to pick up his second victory.

El Camino Real 16, Cleveland 6--Craig Carlton doubled and hit his second home run in a three-for-three, five-RBI performance for the Conquistadores in a West Valley League game.

Randy Wolf went three for five, including two triples, and drove in two runs, while freshman Shaun Fishman earned his first save by pitching 2 2/3 hitless innings.

Sophomore Junior Brignac was two for three with a home run for Cleveland.

Chatsworth 9, San Fernando 3--Ray Daryabigi struck out four and walked one for Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference victory.

The junior pitcher also went three for four at the plate, while Bryan LaCour and Tony Montiel both turned in two-for-two, two-RBI games.

For San Fernando (1-10, 0-3), Rick Anguiano went two for three and drove in a run, and Jerry Serratos was two for four with an RBI.

Ceres 5, Chaminade 4--Chaminade rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short in the championship game of the Modesto Beyer tournament.

Catcher Brandon Gray had a two-run single in the seventh, but Chaminade stranded the tying run at second. Pitchers Dan Keeler and Matt Sagoian combined on a three-hitter and allowed one earned run for Chaminade (9-6).

Saugus 14, Burbank 2--Sophomore Nate Wright hit a three-run home run and Danny Cato added a two-run homer to highlight an eight-run first inning for Saugus (10-4-1, 2-1) in a Foothill League game.

The Centurions’ Brandon Hernandez added a two-run home run in the sixth.

San Ramon 9, Hueneme 5--Robert Ralston and Art Bolen each had two hits and one RBI for Hueneme, but the Vikings (5-8) dropped their opening pool play game of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

SOFTBALL

Canoga Park 5, Birmingham 0--Darla Jones pitched a three-hitter, struck out five and added a two-RBI triple for host Canoga Park.

Jones (3-5) walked two as Canoga Park (3-6, 3-1) won its third game in a row.

Grant 7, North Hollywood 5--Claudia Soto, Azusena Barragan and Brynna McNulty each had two hits for North Hollywood (3-9, 1-3) in an East Valley league loss.

Chatsworth 9, Taft 1--Parisa Plant was two for four, including a three-run triple in the second inning, and drove four runs as Chatsworth (8-0) won the Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Senior Nicole Grizzell (8-0) pitched a three-hitter with two strikeouts.

El Camino Real 11, Reseda 0--Jennifer Gould (10-2) struck out nine, walked one and scattered four hits while recording her eighth shutout for El Camino (10-2, 4-0, 1-0) in a West Valley League opener.

The senior pitcher also helped herself at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in three more in handing Reseda (8-1, 3-1, 0-1) its first defeat.

Kennedy 6, Cleveland 4--Sandra Durazo (4-6, 1-0) recorded 11 strikeouts for Kennedy (4-6, 1-0) in a North Valley League opener.

The freshman pitcher surrendered one hit--a home run by Cleveland pitcher Oliva Miguel-- and issued seven walks.

Simi Valley 2, Westlake 0--Sara Griffin pitched a two-hitter and struck out 12 in the Marmonte League game at Rancho Santa Susana Park.

Jamie Griffin’s RBI single gave Simi Valley (10-1, 4-1) a 1-0 lead in the fifth and Sara Griffin scored the Pioneers’ second run on a delayed steal of home in the sixth.

Thousand Oaks 5, Camarillo 0--Jessie Davenport pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 for her sixth shutout of the season for Thousand Oaks in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Julie Olin was two for two, drove in Thousand Oaks’ first run and scored a run.

Saugus 6, Burroughs 0--Kelli Kranz was two for two and drove in two runs and Chris Gill was two for four with two runs scored for the Centurions (15-2) in a Foothill League game.

Jamie Gillies (12-2) struck nine in six innings to earn the victory.

Long Beach Poly 2, Royal 1--An error and a passed ball led to two unearned runs for Long Beach Poly (2-4) in the sixth inning. Sophomore Kaelynn Jones (3-2) took the loss despite allowing only two hits over seven innings while striking out seven.
