BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Brito’s Two-Run Single Gives Cypress an Upset Victory Over El Dorado

Bobby Brito hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to break a tie and lead Cypress to a 4-2 upset victory over El Dorado in an Empire League baseball game Friday at El Dorado High.

Brian Flanagan gave up two earned runs in seven innings to improve to 3-3 for Cypress (6-9-2, 1-6). Brito also had an RBI double in the fourth to help the Centurions tie the score, 2-2.

El Dorado’s Spencer Frost hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Golden Hawks (13-5, 5-2) a 2-0 lead. Benny Flores gave up four earned runs in seven innings, falling to 3-4.

In another Empire League game:

Katella 6, Esperanza 1--Jaret Wright went three for four with a home run and two doubles for Katella (11-6, 5-2). Esperanza is 6-8, 3-4.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 2, Lake Elsinore Cal Lutheran 1--Andy Koert had two hits, including a game-winning sixth-inning single, for visiting St. Margaret’s (7-1, 2-0).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 15, Sherman Indian 3--Tim St. Clair struck out 11 in a complete-game victory. Keith Rideway hit a two-run home run and Josh Cameron added three hits and three RBIs for SCC.

In the Express League:

Heritage Christian 14, Santa Fe Pioneer Christian 4 (5, mercy)--Dave Acheson went three for three with three RBIs for Heritage Christian (6-4, 1-0). Teammate John Cortez had three hits with two RBIs and Scott Smith went two for two with two RBIs.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 7, Sonora 2--Ryan Glenn hit his first two home runs of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth and a bases-empty in the sixth for Buena Park (9-6, 5-2). Johnny Cabral had two hits, an RBI and one run scored and Greg Cabral had a two-run homer in the third.

Danny Baca pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and striking out seven.

Fullerton 7, Sunny Hills 6--Steve St. Pierre hit a two-run home run and Ryan Schatz added a home run in the three-run sixth inning to help rally Fullerton (14-3, 6-1).

Troy 12, La Habra 9 (9 innings)--La Habra committed three errors to open the top of the ninth, then Brian Logan hit a two-run single to spark a three-run inning for visiting Troy (11-5, 4-3). Logan had three hits and four RBIs. La Habra’s Donny Cisneros hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 2, Kennedy 1--Shortstop Alex Francisco led Bolsa Grande (8-7, 4-2) in its victory over the Fighting Irish at Kennedy. Francisco went four for four, scoring both runs. He stole second, third and home in the third inning to give Matadors the victory.

Garden Grove 6, Los Amigos 1--Justin Lewis went three for three with an RBI for Garden Grove (8-7, 2-3).

La Quinta 2, Rancho Alamitos 1 (8 innings)--C.J. Livernois’ bases-loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the eighth to win it for seventh-ranked La Quinta (15-3, 6-0).

La Quinta’s Joe Garcia (4-0) pitched a complete game, striking out 10 and walking none.

Pacifica 9, Santiago 8--Chad Brown had two hits and two RBIs to lead Pacifica (8-9, 2-3).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 12, Western 0--Bryan Robinson (5-2) struck out 12, giving up only three hits in a complete game for the sixth-ranked Wildcats. John Stoddard had two hits and three RBIs and Trevor Lords added three hits and one RBI for Brea-Olinda (15-2, 5-2).

Savanna 2, Magnolia 0--Russel Hartman (2-2) struck out six and gave up two hits for the complete-game shutout. Mike Hynes had an RBI single in the first inning for Savanna (6-11, 3-4).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 13, Costa Mesa 2--Jairo Arceyut had a two-run single, and Pedro Arceyut tripled him in to key an eight-run, third-inning rally for host Estancia (8-9, 4-3).

Laguna Hills 6, Laguna Beach 3--The Hawks (7-8, 4-3) built a 5-0 lead after two innings at home and held off a late rally by Laguna Beach. Ryan Sauers hit his third home run of the season for the Artists (5-10, 1-6).

Trabuco Hills 8, Century 7--Brian Costello had a two-run single in a five-run third inning for Trabuco Hills (12-5, 7-0), which hung on for the victory.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 10, Newport Harbor 3--Chad Johnson hit a three-run homer and Jeff Bowman had three doubles and three RBIs for host Corona del Mar (13-4, 4-2). Jim Huston was four for four for the Sea Kings.

Santa Margarita 6, Saddleback 1--Chris Collins and Curt Flore each had two hits for visiting Santa Margarita (9-7, 5-1).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 6, Santa Ana 0--Tom Barilla (2-1) gave up two hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one, for the victory at Edison. Barilla also drove in two runs. Todd Belitz had a two-run homer in the first inning and Greg Hanoian went two for two with a triple and two runs scored for the Chargers (13-4, 4-2). Lupe Alvarez took the loss for Santa Ana (0-6, 4-12).

Servite 4, Marina 2--Ross Miedecke struck out five and gave up two earned runs to lead Servite. Kevin Krotz had one hit and two RBIs and John Goldsmith had one hit and scored two runs for Servite.

In nonleague baseball:

Liberty Christian 25, Pacific Shores 3 (5, mercy)--Bryan Davis was four for four with eight RBIs for visiting Liberty Christian (7-4), which had 18 hits.
