Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Dominguez and Long Beach Poly, two high school basketball programs that always seem to rank among the best in the area, were in familiar positions last season.

Poly won the Southern Section Division I-AA title with a 71-60 win over Crescenta Valley and Dominguez, ranked No. 1 in Division II-A most of the season, settled for second place after a heartbreaking 55-54 loss to St. John Bosco in the championship game at Anaheim Arena.

The success of the schools is reflected in The Times’ 1994 South Coast All-Star Team. Dominguez and Poly each have three players on the 10-member team.

Poly placed forwards Zerrick Campbell and James Brown and guard Damion Dawson on the team. Dominguez was represented by guard Jamie Gillin and forwards Thomas Prince and Daryl Todd.

Gillin, who led Dominguez to back-to-back berths in Southern Section finals, and Campbell are the only repeat selections from the 1993 team.

Selections were based on ballots cast by area coaches and a poll of Times sportswriters.

The players, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Long Beach, 333 E. Ocean Blvd. The area player and coach of the year will be announced at the breakfast.

A look at the all-stars:

Michael Batiste (Long Beach Wilson)--Opponents can consider the play of the 6-foot-7 forward as a warning: Batiste is expected to be one of the premier front-line players in Southern California next season. He offered a preview by averaging 17.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists as a junior. He made the Southern Section Division I and Cal-Hi Sports News All-State Underclass team and is already being recruited by NCAA Division I schools such as Duke, Kansas and Georgetown.

James Brown (Long Beach Poly)--One big reason why the Jackrabbits should be successful again next season is the return of the 6-6 Brown. He played a pivotal role in Poly’s title run, averaging 16.8 points, six rebounds and three assists. He shared Moore League most valuable player honors with teammate Campbell and was named to the Division I first team. He also made the All-State Underclass team and is being recruited by Division I schools such as California, Stanford, USC and Syracuse.

Zerrick Campbell (Long Beach Poly)--He is not the most boisterous player on the court, but the 6-6 Campbell has excelled with his workmanlike approach. He is especially strong around the basket and averaged 15.2 points and 12.3 rebounds. In addition to being Moore League co-MVP, he was named to the all-state team by Cal-Hi Sports and the Southern Section Division I team. He has signed with the University of San Francisco.

Damion Dawson (Long Beach Poly)--Last but not least in a talented trio for Poly is Dawson, a 6-3 guard who helped the Jackrabbits in their title run with his outside shooting. He averaged 12.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and four assists and was named to the Moore League team. Only a junior, he is regarded as a top prospect and his early recruiting list includes Boston College, Wake Forest and Long Beach State.

Marquis Flemons (Compton)--Among the top outside shooters on the team is Flemons, a 6-3 guard. He averaged 20 points to lead the Tarbabes to the second round of the Division II-AA playoffs. Flemons was a Moore League selection and a Division II second-team pick. He expects to play at a community college next season.

Jamie Gillin (Dominguez)--One of the most touted seniors on the squad is also an exceptional outside shooter. A 6-4 guard, Gillin averaged 20 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Dons. Also regarded as a solid defender, Gillin was an all-state selection by Cal-Hi Sports and made the Division II first team. He signed a national letter of intent with Tulsa after also considering Washington State.

Ryan Hankins (St. Anthony)--When it comes to all-around athleticism, the 6-3 Hankins fits the bill. He made the all-league first team in football as a defensive back and basketball as a forward. He averaged 21.5 points, ranking among the top scorers on the South Coast team, along with 12 rebounds and four assists. Hankins is undecided about what college he will attend.

John Kohlhaas (Lakewood)--The leading scorer on the team was Kohlhaas, a 6-6 forward who averaged 22.3 points. But Kohlhaas didn’t earn recognition only for his offensive skills. He demonstrated his all-around ability by averaging 10.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. A Moore League first-team selection, Kohlhaas is undecided about his college plans.

Thomas Prince (Dominguez)--In an excellent season for underclassmen in the South Coast, the 6-5 Prince also ranks among the best. He is regarded as one of the top juniors in the state, having been named to the All-State Underclass team by Cal-Hi Sports and the Division II first team. Last season, he averaged 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Prince has already been recruited by UCLA and North Carolina.

Daryl Todd (Dominguez)--The 6-4 Todd, a forward, was the team’s third-leading scorer with a 15-point average and also averaged eight rebounds and five assists. A San Gabriel Valley League selection, he is undecided about his college plans.
