DIGEST : Glendale’s Reilly in Repeat Showing at Grand Olympic

Pepe Reilly of Glendale will make his second professional appearance at the Grand Olympic Auditorium with a six-round junior welterweight bout tonight against Randy Archuleta of Selma, Calif.

Reilly, 22, is 5-1, all of his victories by knockout. Archuleta (6-8, four KOs) is fighting for only the third time in two years.

The fight is on the undercard of a 10-round junior welterweight bout between Hector Lopez of Glendale and Rod Sequenan of San Jose. Lopez (25-3-1, 12 KOs), 27, was a 1984 Olympic silver medalist for Mexico. Sequenan, 33, is 56-22-5 with 32 knockouts.

Also on the undercard, P.J. Goossen (10-0, nine KOs) of North Hollywood will make his Grand Olympic debut in a six-round junior middleweight fight against an opponent to be determined.

Basketball

Chris Perez, an assistant the past two seasons, has been named boys’ basketball coach at Notre Dame High, replacing Pete Cassidy who resigned after one season.

Perez, a 1980 graduate of Notre Dame, also has served as the school’s junior varsity coach the past two seasons, compiling a 33-12 record. Perez led the Knights to a 14-0 mark in Mission League play last season.

“He’s come through our system and done a great job,” Athletic Director Kevin Rooney said.

Perez played varsity basketball at Notre Dame for two seasons before attending Loyola Marymount. He began coaching at Notre Dame in 1991.

Notre Dame was 12-14 last season, losing to Moorpark in the wild-card round of the Southern Section Division III-A playoffs.

Golf

Brandon Jones, a senior at Agoura High, has accepted a scholarship to play golf at San Diego State, Agoura Coach Frank Greminger said.

Jones finished in third place in the Marmonte League championships last year and missed the cut in the state tournament by two strokes.

“I think it will be good for him,” Greminger said. “They’re trying to rebuild their program and he’ll get a chance.”

Miscellany

Saticoy Country Club will serve as one of the sites for local qualifying for the 94th U.S. Golf Assn.’s Open championship. Qualifying will take place May 23. Application deadline is April 27.

The Cal State Northridge Athletic Assn. will hold a benefit auction April 30 at 6 p.m. at the Warner Center Marriott hotel in Woodland Hills. The event will include the sale of vacation packages, sports memorabilia, tickets to Los Angeles-area sporting events and theater events. Proceeds will help offset lost income from sporting events canceled because of the Northridge earthquake.

The West Valley Youth Athletic Assn. is holding sign-ups for fall football for players and cheerleaders ages 7 to 15. Sign-up dates are April 30 and May 1 at Fallbrook Mall in West Hills from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
