Simi Valley’s Scheffels Hit With Suspension

SIMI VALLEY — The Simi Valley High baseball team will be without senior Bill Scheffels, its leading hitter and winningest pitcher, for its crucial game at Newbury Park today.
Scheffels was suspended from school indefinitely on Wednesday, reportedly for his involvement in a bomb threat prank at school.
Scheffels had a hearing with school administrators on Thursday afternoon, but no further decision was reached regarding his suspension, he said. Scheffels said he didn’t know what was next in the resolution of the situation.
Scheffels refused to comment on the reason for his suspension. Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers referred inquiries to Principal Kathryn Scroggin, who said she could not comment on student disciplinary matters.
The Times’ Ventura County pitcher of the year last season, Scheffels did not play in the Pioneers’ 13-5 loss to Royal on Wednesday. Scyphers said senior Kary Kozlowski will start in place of Scheffels today against Newbury Park.
The second-place Pioneers (14-5, 6-3 in league play) trail Newbury Park (15-5, 8-1) by two games with five to play.
Scheffels, who has signed to play at Nevada Las Vegas next season, is leading the Marmonte League with a .517 batting average. He is 6-1 with a 2.66 earned-run average.
