HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Down by 3, Burbank Rallies in 7th

Briston Nelson’s bases-loaded, one-out single drove in the winning run Thursday in Burbank High’s 6-5 Foothill League baseball victory over Canyon at Burbank.

Nelson’s hit capped a four-run rally for the Bulldogs (9-12, 3-6 in league play) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brian Sindle was three for three and pitched a complete game for Burbank.

Montclair Prep 11, Pasadena Poly 8--Darrell Dent had a three-run home run and Ethan Parker, Matt Muler and Andrew Miller each had two hits for the Mounties (16-6) in a nonleague game called after six innings because of darkness.

Santa Paula 9, Santa Clara 5--Joseph Jauregui doubled, tripled and drove in a run for Santa Paula (8-12-1, 5-6) in the Frontier League victory.

David Qualls was three for four with two runs batted in for Santa Paula, including his first home run, and teammate Raul Santa Rosa was two for three.

Kennedy 11, San Fernando 0--Brad Cooperman pitched his third complete game for Kennedy (10-9, 5-6) in the Northwest Valley Conference game.

Devin Connolly, David Soto, Kevin Serr and Kenny Bernas each had two hits to pace an 11-hit attack.

Granada Hills 8, Cleveland 2--Bryan Weinstein went two for three and scored three times for Granada Hills (12-5, 8-4) in the Northwest Valley Conference game.

Jim Landress, the son of Cleveland Coach Steve Landress, had his second first-inning home run in one week for the Highlanders against his father’s team.

Kevin Delgado was two for four for Cleveland, and Casey Roth was two for three with one RBI.

El Camino Real 5, Taft 4--Taft, which outhit the Conquistadores, 8-5, left the bases loaded in the third with one out.

Craig Carlton doubled twice for El Camino Real.

SOFTBALL

Kennedy 6, Carson 3--Freshman Sandra Durazo had 14 strikeouts and two hits, including a two-run home run in the second inning, for the Cougars (7-9) in a City Section 4-A first-round playoff game.

Granada Hills 4, Birmingham 3--Freshman Jessica Crone scored the winning run from second base on sophomore Danielle Saunders’ bunt single with one out in the eighth inning of a City Section 4-A first-round playoff game at Granada Hills.

Crone was running with the pitch on the sacrifice attempt, and didn’t slow down at third while a play was being made at first on Saunders.

Newbury Park 7, Royal 0--Kristy Fox struck out five and walked one for Newbury Park (15-6, 6-4), allowing only a two-out sixth-inning single by Molly O’Neill in the Marmonte League victory.

Amy Bermen doubled and tripled for the Panthers and scored twice.

BOYS’ TRACK

Alpha League finals--Jim Romero of L.A. Baptist won the high jump and the long jump, placed second in the 100 and ran a leg on the Knights’ victorious 400 relay team in the meet at Caltech.

Romero, who is headed to Arizona on a football scholarship, cleared 6 feet in the high jump, spanned 20-9 1/2 in the long jump and ran 11.4 in the 100. L.A. Baptist timed a season-best of 44.2 in the 400 relay.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Alpha League finals--Village Christian junior Trisha Palmquist won the 400 (62.0), 800 (2 minutes 26.6 seconds) and shotput (31-4), and placed second in the long jump (14-11) in the meet at Caltech.

Jennifer Overlock of L.A. Baptist was a double winner in the 1,600 (5:23.5) and 3,200 (12:00.4).

VOLLEYBALL

L.A. Baptist d. Village Christian, 15-7, 8-15, 11-15, 15-12, 15-6--Dustin Stamp made 39 kills and Shawn Farrell added 21 for L.A. Baptist (11-2, 7-1) in the Alpha League match.

Tim Beck made 63 assists for the Knights, who finished tied for first place in the league with Village Christian.

Van Nuys d. Canoga Park, 10-15, 15-12, 15-11, 15-4--Shane Karimoto and Hubert Kim each had 15 kills to lead the Wolves (14-1) in the quarterfinals of the City 3-A playoffs.

Van Nuys will play Franklin Tuesday at a site to be determined.
