HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Gantt Gives Up 1 Hit and Strikes Out 9 in Glendale’s 2-1 Win

Glendale High’s David Gantt struck out nine and pitched a one-hitter Friday as the Dynamiters defeated Pasadena, 2-1, in a Pacific League game at Glendale.

Gantt (3-6), who had a perfect game in the Babe Herman tournament against Artesia a month ago, allowed only a second-inning double.

David Garley doubled home both runs for Glendale (9-12, 4-8) in the third inning.

Royal 14, Thousand Oaks 1--The Highlanders sent 11 batters to the plate during a sixth-run fifth inning of the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks (11-11, 4-8). Joel Mellinger, who doubled twice in the fifth, scored three times.

Pitcher Maki Kramer (9-0), who drove in three runs and had a solo home run, and Kevin Mellinger each had two hits for Royal (14-8, 7-5), which has scored 11 or more runs nine times.

Westlake 5, Channel Islands 4--Eric Devine gave up a run and four hits in four innings, picking up the Marmonte League victory for host Westlake (13-12, 4-8) in his first varsity start. Chris Flanagan entered in the seventh with a 5-1 lead and the bases loaded and got out of the jam with a save.

Matt Zeedik was two for four for the Warriors. Channel Islands (13-9, 7-5) had won three league games in a row and seven of its past nine. The Raiders fell into a tie with Royal for third place in the league, a half-game behind Simi Valley, which was rained out.

Oak Park 9, Carpinteria 4--Brian McMullen hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to tie the score, 4-4, and Ricky Lane doubled in the go-ahead run later in the inning for visiting Oak Park (11-5-1, 6-4) in the Tri-Valley League game.

Brent Schneider also homered and Cameron Marcarelli and Vaughn Corley each doubled to pace a 12-hit attack for the Eagles.

Notre Dame 2, St. Bernard 1--Jabbar Craigwell walked, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on Joey Orlando’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give host Notre Dame (16-5, 10-2) the Mission League victory.

Orlando had two of Notre Dame’s four hits, and Andy Lutz (5-2) scattered nine hits, struck out five and did not allow an earned run in a route-going performance.

Crespi 9, Harvard-Westlake 2--Brad Farlow, John Campanella and Mike Glendenning each had two hits to lead the Celts (15-8, 7-5) in a Mission League game at Valley College. Crespi is tied for the third and final automatic playoff spot with Chaminade. The Celts and Eagles will play twice next week.

Ron Jones (8-3) pitched five innings against Harvard, scattering five hits and walking eight, but giving up only one run.

Chaminade 5, Bishop Montgomery 2--John Gunn hit a three-run double during Chaminade’s five-run first inning as the Eagles (15-8, 7-5) won the Mission League game at Bishop Montgomery. Gabe Crecion (8-2) pitched four innings and scattered three hits.

Montclair Prep 17, Paraclete 6--Matt Muller was three for three with three RBIs, leading the visiting Mounties (17-6) in the nonleague game. Ethan Parker, Brandon Michaels and Josh Persell each had three hits. The Mounties scored in every inning.

First Lutheran 7, Viewpoint 6--Host First Lutheran squandered a 6-3 sixth-inning lead, then won the Heritage League game in the bottom of the seventh when Joe De Anda walked with the bases loaded to force home Carlos Alderete.

Joel Hernandez (9-2) had two hits and two RBIs, and struck out 10 for First Lutheran (15-3, 9-1).

Faith Baptist 10, Pacific Hills 1--Judd Granzow (7-3) threw a three-hitter, struck out 16 and had three hits, including a three-run home run, to pace the Contenders’ Delphic League victory.

Chris Neville went three for four and Jay Carpenter had two hits for Faith Baptist (9-9, 5-3).

Littlerock 7, Quartz Hill 3--Darrell Hussman hit solo home runs in the second and sixth innings but host Quartz Hill lost the Golden League game. Littlerock took advantage of four errors by the Rebels and scored three unearned runs.

Bell-Jeff 10, St. Genevieve 3--David Quintero slugged a homer and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring three times for host Bell-Jeff in a Camino Real League game.

John Pawlik, David Matekel, Richard Szeptycki and Victor Ayala each had two hits for Bell-Jeff (8-12-1, 4-3-1), and Pawlik (4-2) allowed only two earned runs in pitching a complete game.

Buckley 8, Queen of Angels 2--T.J. Jackson (4-1) had a no-hitter through six innings and finished with a two-hitter, striking out 11 for host Buckley in a Liberty League game.

Mitch Brim tripled, doubled and drove in three runs for league-leading Buckley (13-4, 9-0).

Kennedy 11, Cleveland 0--Junior catcher Kevin Serr had an inside-the-park grand slam for the visiting Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Kennedy’s Keith Brydon, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, finished with a one-hitter. He struck out nine and walked two.

Kennedy’s Richard Prieto drove in four runs on a three-run double and a bases-loaded walk.

John Lopez had the only hit for Cleveland (3-14, 2-10), a single with two out in the bottom of the sixth.

El Camino Real 6, Reseda 0--Tony Kyber (6-1) pitched his fifth complete game, striking out eight for the host Conquistadores (16-4, 9-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Steve Riback had two doubles and Craig Carlton hit a three-run home run for El Camino Real.

SOFTBALL

Chatsworth 7, Banning 1--The host Chancellors knocked off the two-time City finalists in the first-round 4-A City Section playoff game. Lisa Seltzer and Tawny Takagi each doubled and drove in two runs for Chatsworth.

Alemany 6, Louisville 0--The Indians (18-2, 10-0) pounded 13 hits against Louisville and clinched at least a share of the Mission League title--for the fourth consecutive year--with two games remaining.

Esmeralda Macias went four for four to lead the attack. Sophie Contreraz (18-2) pitched a five-hitter and struck out three. Jamie Moore’s two-run triple gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the fifth.

Crescenta Valley 1, Hoover 0--Wendy Miller’s double in the 10th drove in Erin Linnemeyer (two hits) as the Falcons (19-3, 6-2) won the Pacific League game at Hoover.

Kim Scott (8-1) allowed only three hits and struck out six.

Calabasas 7, Nordhoff 0--Keyna Bell hit a three-run home run as Calabasas jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the second inning of the Frontier league game. Bell finished with two hits and four RBIs for Calabasas (8-8, 5-5).

Village Christian 17, Marshall Fundamental 0--Jessie Leivo threw her third no-hitter in four games for the host Crusaders (11-7, 5-3) in an Alpha League game.

Leivo had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Teammate Jeanne Beauchamp was three for four with four runs batted in for Village Christian.

L.A. Lutheran 16, Ribet 5--Heather Sanchez and Rebekkah Roberts each had three hits to lead host L.A. Lutheran (11-4, 8-0) in a Heritage League game.

Notre Dame 10, Harvard Westlake 0--Crista Corpening struck out five and allowed one hit in five innings for Notre Dame in the Mission league game. Amy Goad had two hits and three RBIs for the Knights (13-10, 7-3).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Newbury Park, 15-10, 15-5, 15-7--Dan Rizzo had seven kills and five aces, leading the host Highlanders (13-3, 13-1) in the Marmonte League match. Though tied with Thousand Oaks, Royal clinched the top spot in the league for Southern Section playoff seeding purposes.

Thousand Oaks d. Camarillo 17-15, 15-7, 15-11--In sweeping, the Lancers claimed a share of the Marmonte League championship with Royal, marking the first time in six years that the Highlanders have not won the league title outright. David Sotolov had 18 kills and 13 digs for Thousand Oaks (13-1).

TRACK

Channel League finals--Andrea Wasden of Rio Mesa won the 200 meters (25.2 seconds), 100-meter hurdles (14.4) and 300 hurdles (44.5) at Santa Barbara City College. The junior also anchored the Spartans’ winning 1,600 relay team of Aubrey Mescher, Susyn Heidenrich and Genny Johnson to a time of 4:06.86.

Jay Ramsey and Noah Walsh of Ventura won five events. Ramsey timed 21.6 and 48.0 to win the 200 and 400. Walsh won the 110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles in 14.9 and 38.5, and cleared 6-4 in the high jump. Ventura’s Brian Faulso won the shotput with a heave of 49 feet 5 1/4 inches.

Frontier League finals--Javier Ramirez of Nordhoff won the mile and two-mile in 4:30.3 and 9:50.2 at Nordhoff High. Teammate Archie Jackson won the 440 yards in 51.2 and also ran on the Rangers’ victorious 440 and mile relays.
