Kelly Schlender of Ventura College won the 36-hole Junior College Individual Golf Championship on Monday with rounds of 71 and 78 at Mission Viejo Country Club.

Schlender finished in a tie with Aki Amaya of Saddleback College and Birmingham High. Amaya also had rounds of 71 and 78.

The tie was settled by a card-off, using each player’s performance over the final nine holes as a sudden-death playoff. Amaya’s triple-bogey on the 15th hole gave Schlender the victory.

Baseball

Lawrence Trygstad, an attorney representing the Simi Valley High baseball players, said Monday he will file his request today for a temporary restraining order that could return suspended Coach Mike Scyphers to his position this week.

The request will be filed this morning in Ventura County Superior Court in Ventura, Trygstad said, and a hearing could be scheduled for this afternoon or Wednesday morning. If the order is granted, Scyphers could return to the team immediately.

The players contend that Scyphers’ suspension so late in the season damages the team. He should be allowed to coach pending the outcome of a police and school district investigation into possible financial and disciplinary improprieties, according to the players.

Scyphers, 41, returned to school Monday to teach driver’s education and physical education. He had not taught since he was suspended as baseball coach last Tuesday.

A group of parents who support Scyphers have scheduled a meeting with Supt. Mary Beth Wolford and Principal Kathryn Scroggin for Wednesday morning at the school district office.
