SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS : Fullerton Upsets Lakewood With Two Runs in the 12th

Nadia Hoerner and Valerie Miller hit back-to-back triples and Amy Simpson singled in Miller in the 12th inning to give Fullerton a 2-0 victory over fourth-seeded Lakewood in the second round of the Southern Section Division II softball playoffs Tuesday at Lakewood.

Angie Fancuberta (16-12) gave up seven hits and was supported by a solid defensive effort. Lakewood (22-8) had runners at second and third in the first inning, but had only three runners reach second base the rest of the way. In the fifth, left fielder Simpson threw out Amy Lewis at the plate, preventing the tiebreaking run.

Simpson and McAulay each had two hits. Fullerton (16-13) will play host to Covina Charter Oak Thursday.

In Division III softball:

Whittier La Serna 1, Laguna Hills 0 (18)--With two outs in the bottom of the 18th, La Serna (16-7) got two hits and then a bouncer over the infield to score the winning run, ending Laguna Hills' hopes of defending its division title. Alycia Stevens and Jennifer Arzola each had three hits for Laguna Hills (15-10). Windy Scofield (6-5) pitched all 17 2/3 innings for the Hawks.

Redondo Beach Redondo Union 1, Woodbridge 0 (17 innings)--Woodbridge freshman Stephanie Bernritter had a no-hitter through 12 1/3 innings, didn't walk a batter and struck out 10 in 16 innings before leaving with arm stiffness.

Cory Washington (10-3) replaced Bernritter and walked Selena Fine, who was bunted to second base. After shortstop Alison Johnsen threw out Leanna Evans at first base, and Fine broke for third, first baseman Keri Byrd's throw across the infield skidded past the third baseman and Fine scored.

Johnsen had three hits and a stolen base, adding to her section career record. She finished with 195. Winning pitcher Kari Martin struck out 16 and had the only hit for Redondo (20-5). Fourth-seeded Woodbridge finished 21-9.
