Riedmiller Leaving Camarillo, Will Teach at Channel Islands

Dennis Riedmiller, who guided the Camarillo High boys’ track and field team to its first Marmonte League title in 12 years this season, expects to be teaching at Channel Islands High in the fall.

Riedmiller, 37, coached track and football and taught special education classes for the past four years, but was told earlier this month that budget cuts would prevent the school from rehiring him.

Channel Islands has offered him a special education position that he plans to accept.

“I was a temporary teacher and the numbers just didn’t add up,” Riedmiller said. “In no way am I bitter at all. I’m going to miss the kids at Camarillo and the school itself because I graduated from there, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. You have to go where the jobs are.”

Camarillo posted a 12-2 record in Marmonte League competition during Riedmiller’s two seasons as boys’ track coach.

Prior to that, he was the Scorpion girls’ coach in 1992 and an assistant who worked with the jumpers in 1991.

In football, he was a varsity assistant in 1990 and ’91 and the junior varsity coach in 1992 and ’93.

He said he is interested in coaching at Channel Islands in some capacity, but has yet to discuss it with school officials.

No successor has been named at Camarillo.

Simi Valley High graduate Ryan Hankins was one for three with a three-run home run, helping the California All-Stars to a 13-2 victory over Florida in the championship game of the Sunbelt High School Seniors Baseball Classic on Saturday in Edmond, Okla.

Hankins’ home run was part of a six-run second inning. The game was called by mutual agreement after five innings.

Hankins, who made the All-tournament team, was 13 for 23 with nine runs batted in. He also started an around-the-horn triple play while playing third base. It is believed to be the only triple play in the 19-year history of the series.
