NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : 13 Local Athletes Will Compete in Mexico City Track Meet

Thirteen athletes from the San Gabriel Valley will take part in a major junior international track and field meet this weekend in Mexico City.

The event is part of an exchange program that will allow 30 Mexican athletes to participate in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays next April in Walnut.

Local athletes taking part in the meet in Mexico are Aric Abadie, a pole vaulter from Bishop Amat; decathlete Jason Bradford of South Hills; sprinter Rosalyn Grant of Ganesha; long jumper and high jumper Stephanie Jones of Walnut; sprinter Pat Kooba of Glendora; sprinter Guillarmo Macias of Bishop Amat; sprinter Saki Middleton of Mt. SAC; high jumper Rick Pichford of Charter Oak; sprinter J. Rudolph of West Covina; pole vaulter Jeff Truman of Covina; sprinter Nicole Wallace of Mt. SAC; pole vaulter Robert Wolfe of Damien, and javelin competitor Rudy Davila of Mt. SAC.

Arcadia High won two championships last weekend at the annual L.A. Watts Summer Games.

Arcadia won titles in baseball and girls soccer. The Apaches won the baseball tournament with a 4-0 victory over Tustin and won the girls soccer championship with a 3-0 victory over Peninsula.

Muir finished second in football, losing to Hart, 7-6, in the final.

Susan Hutchinson, a professional horse trainer at Flintridge Riding Club, was selected to the U.S. equestrian team that will compete in the World Equestrian Games Aug. 2 at The Hague, Netherlands.

Hutchinson made the four-person U.S. team by finishing third in the selection trials last week at Gladstone, N.J.

The World Equestrian Games are considered the world championships of the sport and are held every four years.

The Foothill-Citrus Officials Assn. is seeking people interested in becoming high school football officials.

Officials must be available to work games played Thursdays and Fridays at 3:15 p.m.

The group will have its first meeting Aug. 23 at West Covina High.

A golf tournament that will benefit the Hacienda Heights Library will be staged Monday, Aug. 22, at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

A $200 donation includes golf cart, lunch on the course, dinner and an auction. Proceeds will be used to purchase materials for the library’s children’s collection.

A men’s soccer league is being formed in South El Monte for beginner and low-novice players.

Registration has begun for the 33rd annual Glendora Tennis Championships, which will begin July 23.

The tournament is open to players of all ages and ability levels. All finalists receive trophies and awards and $3,000 will be awarded in prize money.
