AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Sun Valley Wins With 5 Unearned Runs

Sun Valley scored five unearned runs to defeat Quartz Hill, 6-5, in 11 innings in the first round of the District 20 American Legion playoffs Tuesday at Birmingham High.

Sun Valley (16-5-1) scored the go-ahead run when the Quartz Hill catcher threw a ball into right field with two out in the 11th inning. Quartz Hill (16-6) made six errors.

Jose Sandoval was three for five for Sun Valley.

Relief pitchers Christian Hernandez and Hugo De La Torre (2-0) shut out Quartz Hill on two hits over the final six innings.

In other District 20 first-round games:

Valley North 3, Verdugo Hills 1--Ray Daryabigi pitched a six-hitter and was two for four with a double, leading Valley North (14-8) at Burroughs High.

Daryabigi struck out seven and walked two for Valley North, which is the seeded 10th.

Phil Onsaga pitched a complete game for Verdugo Hills (15-7), and he provided all the offense with a home run in the ninth inning.

Woodland Hills West 13, Van Nuys West 2--Mike Glendenning broke up Jamie Darnell’s perfect game with a home run leading off the fifth inning and Woodland Hills West went on to score nine runs in the inning at Birmingham High.

It was Glendenning’s first of two home runs in the game, which was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

Matt Tays hit a grand slam later in the fifth inning. Billy Burnette also homered for Woodland Hills West (15-7). It was the third consecutive game in which Burnette had homered.

Greg Kmet pitched a five-hitter for Woodland Hills West, striking out two and walking two.

Van Nuys East 8, Encino 3--Joey Orlando was three for four with two runs batted in for Van Nuys East at Burroughs High.

Rich Igou hit his fourth home run and also drove in two runs. Francisco Dongo added a triple and two RBIs.

Rusty Howard pitched seven innings for Van Nuys East (16-5-1), giving up two earned runs and striking out seven. Howard also walked eight and balked home two runs.

Chris Crowley and Justin Bunch each had two hits for Van Nuys East, which is comprised primarily of players from Notre Dame High. Encino includes players from Crespi, Notre Dame’s archrival.
