Southwestern

1993 RECORDS: 3-7 overall, 1-2 in the division

COACH: Bill Kinney (record at Southwestern, 14-26)

RETURNING STARTERS: 2 on offense, 7 on defense.

OUTLOOK: Southwestern is the newest member of the Central Division. The Apaches made the move when the Southern Division of the Mission Conference disbanded last spring. The division had five teams but San Diego City dropped football after the 1992 season. After last season, Grossmont moved to the Foothill Conference, leaving Palomar, San Diego Mesa and Southwestern. Palomar and San Diego Mesa went to the Northern Division of the Mission Conference. “I wanted to be in this division,” Kinney said. “We think it’s the best division around and we like that challenge of that.” Southwestern will field mostly first-year players on offense but the defense, which allowed nearly 40 points and 500 yards a game, has improved. Southwestern will depend on several players returning from four-year colleges. Tommy Connor, who played at Baker College in Kansas last season, anchors the secondary. Lamar Bailey, another defensive back, returned from Grambling. Courtney Crawford, a returning all-conference player, and Glenn Steel, who played at Arizona State last season, start at linebacker. George Ayala and Rowland Taa start on the defensive line again. Leon Mayette or O’Brian Woods will start at quarterback. Mayette was at Washington State last season. The running backs, including Alex Gresham, who returned from Weber State, and William Faulkner, who has been in the Navy for the past five years. Mike Williams, a starter two years ago, and John Cotton, who started last season, are back as wide receivers.
