Share

DeWayne Crenshaw rushed for 248 yards and five touchdowns, both career-high marks, as the Costa Mesa Mustangs showed why they are the top-ranked team in Division VIII with a 50-6 victory over host Ocean View Friday night.

The Seahawks lost their 30th consecutive game, spanning the last four seasons, the longest current losing streak in the state.

Crenshaw scored on a 70-yard run on the Mustangs first play from scrimmage. He then returned a kickoff after an Ocean View touchdown 45 yards to set up his second touchdown, a four-yard run with 16 seconds left in the first quarter. He scored on a two-point conversion to give Costa Mesa a 14-6 lead.

Costa Mesa led 22-6 at the half, and scored on all four of their second-half possessions. Their big plays included scoring runs of 60 and 44 yards by Crenshaw and a 99-yard scoring drive in the final quarter, capped with a 30-yard Joey Archuletta scoring run.

The Mustangs rolled up 465 yards rushing, averaging more than 14 yards a carry. Crenshaw, Charles Chatman (115 yards and a touchdown), and Archuletta (78 yards and a touchdown) did the bulk of the damage for the Costa Mesa ground attack.

Ocean View quarterback Ted Norman passed for 155 yards and ran for 79 more. Norman’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Danny Bowen tied the score at 6.

Ocean View did not have any success inside Costa Mesa’s 20. The Seahawks lined up for a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter but John Dempsey never got the chance to attempt it because of a bad snap. After a 66-yard, fourth-quarter drive, the Mustangs stopped Norman up the middle on fourth and goal from the one.
