FOR THE TIMES

There was an air show just south of the El Toro Y Friday night as San Clemente beat El Toro, 21-14, at Trabuco Hills High School.

Triton quarterback Jeff Carlin completed 20 of 39 passing attempts for 274 yards with no interceptions.

“That was our game plan. We wanted to put the ball up as much as possible,” said Carlin, a senior. He also rushed for 28 yards in five carries.

Junior Trevor Insley caught two of Carlin’s three touchdown passes, the first for 62 yards and the second for 24 yards. Insley had 148 yards on five catches.

“We were just fortunate to get out of this one,” San Clemente Coach Mark McElroy said.

That was not far from the truth. The stingy Chargers (0-1) started a fourth-quarter drive on their 4-yard line. The drive ended 12 plays later on a Triton junior Adam Pinion sack at the Triton 25.

The Chargers tied the score, 7-7, in the second quarter as junior Jamie Hamaway scampered four yards into the end zone.

Hamaway finished the game with 130 yards in 30 carries.

The Tritons (1-0) answered on the next drive as Insley caught his second touchdown of the game from 24 yards.

El Toro fought back and scored with just 52 seconds remaining in the first half as quarterback Brian Wilson connected with Joe Ader on a 7-yard touchdown reception.

San Clemente scored on its first possession of the second half as Carlin threw a 6-yard touchdown strike to Kevin Smith.

“I was open on the play before and Jeff managed to find me wide open the next time around,” said Smith, who ended the game with five catches for 32 yards.
