1994 Prep Preview: Girls’ Tennis : Six Teams to Watch : Edison

Share

Coach: Amy Beard (third year).

1993: 21-3, 14-0; lost to Laguna Beach, 11-7, in the Southern Section Division II finals.

Key returners: Kelly Foster, Jr., will play No. 1 singles; Brooke Lacey, Sr., will play No. 2 singles; Tami Demaree, Jr., will play No. 1 doubles; Susie Krum, Sr., will probably play with Demaree.

Key newcomers: Cynthia Torday, Jr., transfer from Northern California, will play doubles; Cerissa Drumm, Fr., will probably play doubles.

Outlook: Edison came within four points of winning the Division II title last year. The Chargers’ chances of getting back to the finals diminished with the loss of sophomore Nicole Kojima, who is academically ineligible. “It’s going to hurt us tremendously,” Beard said. “You don’t lose a player of that caliber.” But Beard has four key players back and a couple of talented players coming in, so Edison should still have one of the county’s top teams. “I’m hoping to win league,” Beard said. “I feel we’re going to be solid. Sometimes having depth is as important as having a real big highly ranked player.”
