PREP ROUNDUP : Saddleback Wins in Girls’ Tennis

With Costa Mesa leading, 9-8, Saddleback’s No. 2 singles player, Suzanne Nguyen, won her final set, 6-3, to tie the match at nine, resulting in a Roadrunner victory in games, 83-67, at Costa Mesa. Saddleback is 1-0; Costa Mesa 0-2.

“I knew we had them in games because of Cyndi (Cao), so I was just hoping Suzanne could win the final set,” Saddleback Coach Mike Conover said.

Nguyen took her sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. Cao, playing at the No. 1 spot, also swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0. 6-0.

In other nonleague tennis:

Corona del Mar 12, University 6--Sea King freshman Nina Vaughan won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, and Alisa Scott won at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Corona del Mar is 1-1.

Estancia 12, Savanna 6--Gillian Whitney won in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2, and teammate Camella Jaeger also swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4, for Estancia (2-1).

Villa Park 15, Katella 3--At No. 1 singles, Faye Devera swept, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0, for Villa Park (1-0). Teammates Jill Riley and Shawna Lerer swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. Cari Ota and Susan Shaw also swept at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, 6-0.

Woodbridge 12, Edison 6--Sophomore Natalie Exon swept her sets for the Warriors, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, and Alyssa Artunian also swept, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1. Woodbridge is 2-1.

Western 11, Fullerton 7--Debbie Jethva swept her sets at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, 6-1, for Western (3-1). In doubles, Suzy Lee and Jannie Kim swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Dana Hills 3, El Toro 2--Fifth-ranked Dana Hills struggled with El Toro winning, 15-12, 15-8, 0-15, 16-18, 15-3. Jenny Kessy had 15 kills and Tara Pollak added 11 for Dana Hills, which remains undefeated at 3-0.
