Chatsworth senior Jorge Buery was granted an extra semester of competition due to hardship by the City rules committee Wednesday.

Buery and his family lost their home in the earthquake and Buery never returned to school. He will repeat his senior year and will be eligible to participate in soccer.

Golf

Jimmy Melton of North Hollywood shot consecutive par 72s to finish in a six-way tie for ninth place in the 11th Southern California Golf Assn. Mid-Amateur Championship at Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert.

Melton finished 13 shots behind runaway winner Mark Johnson of Helendale, who shot 65-66 to successfully defend his title. Johnson won by seven shots.

Linda Chen Olsen of Granada Hills this week advanced to the third round of match play before being eliminated at the Women’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in Tacoma, Wash.

Olsen was defeated by Marla Jemsek of Oviedo, Fla., 1 up.

Track and Field

A pole-vaulting competition, called the Extreme Pole Vault, will be held at Verdugo Park in Burbank on Sept. 24.

The event, which is the creation of former Burroughs High standout Brooks Morris, will consist of high school, open, masters and invitational divisions for male athletes along with an invitational division for women.

Interested individuals can also participate in a hands-on pole-vaulting demonstration at the conclusion of the event.

The Conejo Recreation and Park District has scheduled sign-ups for golf, swimming, gymnastics and tennis activities, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday at the district’s sports office, 2522 Pleasant Way in Thousand Oaks. Information: 805-495-4674.
