SIDELINES : Valley College Baseball Team Sweetly Trades Verdicts for Cash

Share

Penny-pinching college athletic programs take note: the Valley College baseball team has come up with a unique fund-raiser.

About twice a month, a group of about 40 players, coaches and friends are paid members of the studio audience at tapings of “Jones & Jury,” a half-hour courtroom show that airs weekdays on KCAL-TV.

Each member of the audience receives $15 to sit through two tapings. And they have an active role in the show because they determine the verdict by vote.

Beats peddling candy door-to-door. Monarch Coach Chris Johnson said the baseball program is about $1,200 better for the effort. “All the kids have to do is show up,” he said. “You just hate to have to make the kids be salesmen all the time. This is a great thing.”

Special dedications: The football teams from Channel Islands and Village Christian high schools are playing with extra emotion.

Channel Islands dedicated its 20-7 victory over Rio Mesa last week to Junior Tuimoloau, the team’s defensive coordinator. Tuimoloau had open-heart surgery just before summer conditioning drills started last month. He is expected to be watching from the bleachers tonight when the Raiders play host to Hueneme.

“He means so much to the kids and they really care about him,” Channel Islands Coach Joel Gershon said. “They want to do good things for him.”

Village Christian has dedicated its season to Orializ Santos, whose father, Hector, is in charge of field maintenance at the school. Orializ, 17, recently was diagnosed with bone cancer.

“The team found out, got together after practice, and decided they wanted to do something for her,” Village Christian Coach Mike Plaisance said.

Family feuds: Tonight’s football game between Sylmar and Chatsworth highs has at least two families with torn allegiances.

For starters, Dan and Donna Wyatt will be in attendance, but they won’t be sharing any cheers. Dan is an assistant principal at Sylmar, Donna an assistant principal at Chatsworth.

Conflicting dynamics also will be in evidence on the field. Darryl McIntyre, a Sylmar assistant coach, will be suppressing his enthusiasm for the efforts of his nephew, Antonio McIntyre, a Chatsworth running back.

Rumor has it that the Sylmar defense has gleaned inspiration from the younger McIntyre’s presence in their opponent’s backfield. “Yeah, because they hate me so much, they say they’re gonna get him,” Darryl McIntyre said. “But, it’s all in good fun.”

Update

Brooke and Brandy Page, twins and standout distance runners for North Hollywood High last spring, have transferred to Granada Hills.

The pair placed first and second in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in the Valley Pac-8 Conference track-and-field finals in May. Brooke followed that with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 in the City Section championships.

Stats

Missy Clements is averaging 4.9 kills per game for the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team, a pace that would shatter the single-season record of 4.20 set last year by her teammate, Aimee Stone.

Pack of pushovers: The combined 1993 record of Northridge’s 10 football opponents this fall is 47-54-3. Factor out UC Davis, which was 10-2 last year, and the record falls to 37-52-3.

Sure-hands person: Marcos Solorzano’s 10 catches last week against Taft High was the most in a game by a Crespi receiver since Ryan Kieling caught 12 in 1990. The school record is 19, held by Mike Brady in 1974.

Valley College quarterback Jim Arellanes and wide receiver Brian Comer, along with running back George Jones of Bakersfield, were selected offensive tri-players of the week in the Western State Conference. Ventura defensive back Noah Walsh and Glendale linebacker Victor Huezo were defensive co-players of the week.

Walsh, a freshman from Ventura High, intercepted two passes to help the Pirates to a 38-0 interdivisional victory over West L.A., snapping an 11-game losing streak. Huezo, a freshman from Crescenta Valley High, had 10 tackles and three sacks and recovered a fumble in a 28-26 nonconference victory over Citrus.
