Orange County High School Football PREP EXTRA : El Modena’s Late Touchdown Stuns Sunny Hills

El Modena running back Jason Said scored on a five-yard run late in the fourth quarter to give the Vanguards a 10-7 victory over Sunny Hills in a nonleague game Friday at Buena Park High School.

The crowd of 1,800 saw the lethargic Vanguard offense come to life in the second half and steal a victory from the Lancers.

Said’s touchdown run came with 2 minutes 16 seconds left and capped nine-play, 53-yard drive. The key play of the drive came on a fourth and one at the Sunny Hills 7. Quarterback Chris Goodwin powered up the middle on a keeper for a first down at the five.

Sunny Hills quarterback Greg Garand tried to rally his team into field-goal range, but El Modena’s defense held tough. On fourth down and 10 at the Sunny Hills 35, El Modena defensive back Brent Galasso hit wide receiver Eric Hernandez, causing the pass to fall incomplete. El Modena took over on downs and ran out the clock.

Sunny Hills tight end Sean Garanillo scored the first touchdown of the game on a 13-yard pass from Garand with 3:52 left in the second quarter.

El Modena’s defense held Sunny Hills in check for the entire second half. One of the key plays came when defensive back Greg Hanson intercepted a pass at the Sunny Hills 45 yard-line. The play ended the third quarter.

El Modena scored its first points on a 42-yard field goal by Edward Romo with 4:24 left in the third quarter. The play ended a 10-play drive, 40-yard drive.
