NOTEBOOK : Bell Gardens High Honored With Award

Bell Gardens High was honored at the third annual Southern Section/Rams Cavalcade of Champions Awards before the Rams’ game against the Arizona Cardinals Sept. 4.

The awards recognize the top 10 Southern Section schools for achievements based upon playoff competition during the 1993-94 school year. Winners are determined by a point system, which provides five points for a division title, three for a second-place finish, two for a semifinal appearance and one for fourth-place finish.

Bell Gardens, which won the Division III soccer title and advanced to the Division III football and Division II water polo semifinals, finished ninth with 11 points. Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, Mater Dei, Riverside Poly and Sunny Hills tied for first with 13 points.

The Cal State L.A. women’s volleyball team is off to its best start. The Golden Eagles, third in the NCAA Division II rankings, opened the season with five victories to win the Concordia University tournament in Irvine and won the Western Invitational tournament at UC Davis last weekend.

Senior Korina Kemp, selected as the Concordia tournament’s most valuable player for the second consecutive year, has 149 kills in nine matches. Cal State L.A. finished 22-8 last season after reaching the Division II semifinals in 1992.

Setter Adriana Huerta, a senior from Roosevelt High, junior swing hitter Andrea Ferchaw and junior middle blocker Kali Kimura are among seven three-year players.

In cross-country, Marisa Avendano, Marisol Cossio, Martha Pinto and Marisol Pedraza swept the first four places to help the Cal State L.A. women’s team to the team title at the Whittier Invitational. Avendano covered the 5,000-meter course in 22 minutes for the Golden Eagles, ranked second nationally. Ivo Rodrigues of East Los Angeles College won the men’s race.

Former Laker Magic Johnson will be returning to the court, and attorney Robert Shapiro will be taking a day off from court for the Tiny Lister Jr. celebrity basketball game scheduled for Oct. 1 at Cal State Los Angeles.

Proceeds from the game--organized by Lister, 36, the 1982 NCAA Division II shotput champion and Cal State L.A. school-record holder--will benefit the Cal State L.A. athletic scholarship fund and the West Angeles Church of God in Christ community revitalization project.
