ROUNDUP : Strahan, Mortensen Capture Cross-Country Titles at Mt. Carmel Meet

Brett Strahan of Hart High and Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks had the fastest boys’ and girls’ times Saturday in the Mt. Carmel cross-country invitational at Morley Field in San Diego.

Strahan outkicked Eleazar Hernandez of Camarillo and Keith O’Doherty of Thousand Oaks in the final 150 yards to win the Division I senior race with a time of 14 minutes 31 seconds over the three-mile course.

Hernandez timed 14:32, followed by O’Doherty at 14:37.

O’Doherty, who finished second to Strahan in the Seaside Invitational on Sept. 9, surged into the lead with half a mile remaining, but Hernandez passed him with 200 yards left and Strahan went by both of them 50 yards later.

Thousand Oaks’ Jeff Fischer and Kevin Marsden, third and fifth in last year’s State Division I cross-country championships, did not race for the second week in a row because of injuries.

Mortensen ran 15:26 over the 2.5-mile girls’ course to win the Division I junior race. Teammate Tara Marsden placed third in 16:10.

In other high school cross-country meets:

Ojai Invitational--Javier Ramirez of Nordhoff set a course record in the meet at Lake Casitas.

Ramirez, third in last year’s State Division III championships, won the small schools senior race in 15:08, lowering the course record of 15:11, set by Thousand Oaks’ Brandon Del Campo in last year’s Ventura County championships.

Nordhoff teammates Will Bernaldo (15:56) and Omar Vega (16:17) finished first and second in the small schools junior race for the defending State Division III champion Rangers.

Woodbridge Invitational--Amy Skieresz and John Greene of Agoura, and David Lopez of Hoover each won individual titles in the meet at Woodbridge High.

Skieresz, the defending State Division I champion, won the Division II race with a time of 17:22 over the three-mile course.

Greene, the defending Southern Section Division II champion, timed 15:06 in the Division II senior race and Lopez clocked 15:14 in the Division II sophomore competition.

COLLEGE CROSS-COUNTRY

UC Irvine Invitational--Junior Lori Miller and freshman Jamie Whitmore placed 27th and 36th, respectively, as Cal State Northridge finished sixth with 185 points in the women’s competition at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

Stanford (30 points), Arkansas (39) and Northern Arizona (82) finished first through third.

Miller timed 19:21 over the 5,000-meter course and Whitmore ran 19:53.

In the men’s competition, Northridge finished ninth, paced by Armando Lerma’s 46th-place finish in 27:11 over the 8,000-meter course.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 5, Redlands 1--Bryan Lee’s four goals led the Mustangs (5-1) in a nonconference victory at home.

The freshman forward scored in the 13th minute and headed in his second goal in the 26th minute off Steven Janhoe’s corner kick.

Ryan Howard scored from 25 yards in the 34th minute to give Master’s a 3-0 lead, then Lee scored again in the 85th minute on a penalty kick. Four minutes later, he scored after trapping a crossing pass from Steve Palm.

Goalie Kris Bage made three saves, allowing only Monroe Cory’s goal in the 37th minute.

Will Northlitch stopped 13 shots for Redlands (1-5).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 2, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0--Jill Gallegos scored two second-half goals, one in the 48th minute and the other in the 68th, to help the Regals improve to 3-1, 2-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Claremont.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Montclair Prep d. Alverno, 15-7, 15-4--The Mounties swept to the championship in the one-day Westridge tournament in Pasadena, winning five games without a loss, including a victory over Alverno in the final. Reagan Greene, the most valuable player of the tournament, had 36 kills in 10 games.

Jennifer Jarvis had 17 kills, and Vanessa Richlin (all-tournament) had 70 assists.

Highland d. Mojave, 11-5, 11-6--Jasmine Varela had 22 assists to lead the Bulldogs to the championship in the Palmdale tournament.

Pauline Fvolos had 10 kills, and Tlia Stone added nine.

Rim of the World d. Burroughs, 6-15, 15-10, 15-8, 15-11--Christy Russell had 16 kills and Suzy Babko added 11 for Burroughs (3-1), which pushed the defending Southern Section Division III champions to four games in a nonleague match at Burroughs.

WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 13, Villa Park 10--Jim Duff scored eight goals and was selected most valuable player as the Wolverines (5-0) won their second consecutive Millikan tournament championship.

Norm Peterson had nine saves for Harvard-Westlake, which is ranked sixth in the Southern Section Division I coaches poll. Villa Park (4-1) is ranked eighth.

In the semifinals, the Wolverines defeated Santa Barbara, 13-9. Duff had seven goals, and goalie Vahe Aharonian stopped eight shots. Santa Barbara (3-1) is the top-ranked team in Division IV.
