ROUNDUP : Fumble Spells Victory for Faith Baptist

Chris Savoie recovered his own team’s fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with seven seconds to play, giving Faith Baptist High a 38-32 victory over Masada in a nonleague eight-man football game Saturday at Brentwood High.

The game, which pitted No. 1-ranked Faith Baptist (6-0) of the Large Schools Division against No. 2-ranked Masada (4-2) of the Small Schools Division, was tied five times before Savoie’s recovery broke the 32-32 tie.

Quarterback Judd Granzow rushed for 192 yards in 32 carries for Faith Baptist, scoring on runs of one yard, seven yards and 14 yards. He also completed seven of 14 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Colby Carpenter added 98 yards in 16 carries.

Moorpark 45, Santa Clara 10--Bryan Wilkins ran 60 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the Frontier League game at Santa Clara and Moorpark improved to 6-0 for the first time in school history. Wilkins finished with 186 yards and three touchdowns in 20 carries.

Bryan Paul completed six of 11 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for a score.

Oak Park 21, Bishop Diego 6--Ryan Johnson rushed for 107 yards in 21 carries to lead the visiting Eagles (5-1, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League opener.

Ron Allen had a 68-yard run on the first play of the game to set up Oak Park’s first touchdown, a two-yard run by Johnson. Eric Ruhle intercepted a pass.

Bell-Jeff 21, Pius X 7--Danny Hughes rushed for two touchdowns and 54 yards as the Guards (3-3, 2-1) routed winless Pius X (0-6, 0-3) in a Santa Fe League game. Bell-Jeff forced five turnovers, including two interceptions by Gerardo Arroyo.

COLLEGE CROSS-COUNTRY

Santa Barbara Invitational--Jeff Wilson of Moorpark won his fourth race without a loss and the Glendale men’s team remained undefeated against junior college competition in the Santa Barbara Invitational at Shoreline Park.

Wilson, a Newbury Park High product, timed 21 minutes 26 seconds over the four-mile course. Jacques Sallberg (21:42), Nacho Delgado (21:46) and Eduardo Macias (21:49) finished second, third and fourth as Glendale placed five runners among the top eight for a 24-point total.

Ventura, led by the seventh-place finish of Josephina Sanchez, was second in the women’s race with 118 points, seven behind Orange Coast.

SCIAC 8-Way Dual Meet--Jill Fuess clocked 21:20, her personal best on the 3.1-mile course at La Mirada Regional park, but the Cal Lutheran women finished last in the eight-team meet.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 6, La Verne 0--Brian Collins had three goals to lead host Cal Lutheran (4-11, 4-3) in a SCIAC match.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

San Luis Obispo Invitational--Eleazar Hernandez’s individual victory powered Camarillo to the team title in the Division I boys’ race at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Hernandez timed 15:37 over the 5,000-meter course.
