OUTLOOK
The Cougars lost six games last year by three points or fewer, and in five of those games, they had 40 or more turnovers. Still, they reached the Division I-A quarterfinals, losing to eventual-champion Ventura Buena, 51-37. They begin this season with another inexperienced team. Garrett (14.8 points, 9.6 rebounds) is the only returning starter and is looking to make up for a frustrating season. She should be one of county’s best players, but will need to get some help from the guards. A key to the Cougars’ season could be Garrett’s health. She missed summer league because of a bad back. Help for Garrett should come from Fleming, a hard-nosed player with excellent shooting skills. She and Kissell, the other starting freshman, are expected to help Garrett carry the bulk of the scoring load. Ford, a point guard, and Franklin have one very simple task ahead of them: Protect the basketball. Guard play was a problem last year; if it’s reasonably good this season, the Cougars could be surprising.
