OUTLOOK

The Cougars, long a power in Orange County, had an off-year by their standards. They were ranked fifth in the county last season, then the bottom fell out. They lost seven of their last eight games, including a 69-66 loss to Montclair in a Division I-A first-round game. But things should creep back to normal this season. The Cougars have some size and will be tough inside. They are not just tall, but strong. Earnest, the only returning starter, is a banger and averaged six rebounds. He’ll get plenty of help from Thornton, D’Aquanni and Holmes. The trade-off is the Cougars will not be terribly quick. Thornton has a smaller lineup he can use to match up, but expect the Cougars to use more zone than they have in the past. They should have little trouble on offense if teams pack it in, as Brad Thornton and Co. can hit from the outside. This is a team that will be even better than last season’s, as Thornton expects to use a lot of juniors and sophomores. Galvanoni and Thurlow are talented sophomores.
