OUTLOOK

The Barons were one of the county’s great success stories last season when they came together during the Marina tournament without their coach, Strausburg, who was attending her mother’s funeral services in Ohio. Fountain Valley won the tournament and soon reached fifth in the county’s top 10 poll, but flamed out by season’s end to a disappointing conclusion; after a 12-4 start--eight games over .500--the Barons finished 17-10. A similar flameout would be surprising with two of the county’s best juniors, Ludwicki (11-point average) and Strange (11.7), a year older, and their supporting players more mature and experienced. With four starters back, including Avila, the Barons should be one of the county’s elite teams; they move the ball and run the court well, and Strausburg said the group developed more confidence over the summer.
