BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Harvard Wins Game in Final Second, 64-63

Jason Collins made a five-foot shot with less than one second on the clock, giving the Harvard-Westlake High basketball team a dramatic 64-63 season-opening victory over El Cerrito in the first round of the Berkeley High tournament on Thursday.

Harvard-Westlake, which is ranked second in the state in Division III by Cal-Hi Sports, will play Manual Arts today in the semifinals.

The Wolverines trailed by nine points after three quarters, but Ben Robbins brought his team back with three three-point baskets in the fourth quarter. Robbins finished with a game-high 18 points and six assists.

Collins, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. His twin brother, Jarron, scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds.

Crescenta Valley 68, Burbank 65--Brock Jacobsen had 25 and Blake Jacobson added 15 as the Falcons (2-0)--ranked first in the area by The Times--survived an overtime scare in a Burbank-Hoover tournament semifinal matchup.

Four players fouled out for Burbank (1-1), which was led by freshman Juni Williams’ 17-point effort and Don Allado’s 14-point, 15-rebound performance.

Channel Islands 72, Oak Park 69--Junior Mosones had 21 points and seven assists--and an eight-for-11 performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter--to lead the Raiders to a season-opening upset in a Nordhoff tournament first-round game.

The Eagles, ranked ninth in the Times Valley-area preseason poll, were led by Darren Aherne and Shawn Williams, who each scored 17 points, while Brandon Creason added 16.

Van Nuys 68, Narbonne 66--The Wolves survived several missed free throws at the end of the fourth quarter in a nonleague opener.

Junior forward Onaje Longmire scored 22 points, had 17 rebounds and blocked six shots for Van Nuys. Kris Hurdle added 13 points for Van Nuys.

Antonio Jones had 24 points for Narbonne.

Nordhoff 73, Villanova Prep 31--Brothers Allen and Herb Thornton outscored Villanova Prep by themselves in the first round of the Nordhoff tournament. Allen scored 21 points and Herb scored 27 for the Rangers (2-0).

Glendale 73, Canyon 72--Canyon guard Greg Minor scored two of his 45 points in the final seconds to force overtime but the Dynamiters rallied in the second round of the Saugus tournament.

Joe Kurdoglanyan hit two free throws to give Glendale (1-0) a three-point lead late in the extra period, then Minor scored on a layup for Canyon (1-1) as time expired. Arnae Doghossian scored 20 points for Glendale.

MEN

Valley 73, Fullerton 70--The Monarchs (5-2) held off a rally by Fullerton to win their first-round game in the Las Vegas Invitational at UNLV. Fullerton pulled to within one point in the final 30 seconds. Valley’s Butch Harris and Mike Farmer each made two free throws to give the Monarchs a cushion.

Valley will face Cuesta, the 14th-ranked team in the state, in the semifinals today.

Antelope Valley 100, L.A. Trade Tech 63--Orville Turner scored 36 points on 14-for-22 shooting from the field to lead the host Marauders (5-4) in a rout in the first round of their tournament.

WOMEN

Merritt 110, Valley 66--Merritt (8-0) handily defeated the Monarchs in the first round of the College of the Sequoias tournament. Merritt’s Ha Tran connected on five three-pointers in the first half and finished with 21 points.

Erika Kusek led Valley (4-1) with 18 points.

Ventura 83, Mesa 69--Marina Reyes scored 24 points on 12-for-18 shooting to lead the Pirates (4-1) in the first round of the Cypress tournament. Reyes also had six assists and 10 steals for Ventura, which will play Citrus at 6 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Julie Hardy added 21 points for Ventura.

GIRLS

Village Christian 81, St. Genevieve 25--Lindy James scored 20 points and had seven steals for the Crusaders in a first-round game of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Trisha Palmquist had 14 points and April Price added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Village Christian (1-1). The Crusaders had 22 steals.

Simi Valley 81, Canyon 34--Heidi Petz had 14 points, including four three-point goals, and Carrie Billone added 13 coming off of the bench to lead Simi Valley (2-0) in a Crescenta Valley tournament second-round romp.

Jamie Griffin added six points, six assists and five steals, while Tawnee Cooper was held to eight points.
