PREP NOTES : Butts, McCown Make College Choices

Edison volleyball players Jill Butts and Erin McCown orally committed to colleges Friday, Charger Coach Dave Mohs said.

Butts, a 5-foot-10 setter who was the Sunset League’s most valuable player last season and holds many school career records, committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

McCown, a 5-11 outside hitter who was a first-team all-league selection the last two seasons, committed to UC Santa Barbara.

Both were named to the Orange County Championships’ all-tournament team.

Rhonda Weyer, who coached varsity softball at Katella High from 1988 through last season, has been named to head the program at El Modena, girls’ Athletic Director Fred Gale announced Friday.

Weyer, who guided the Knights to the playoffs four of the last six seasons and to the Empire League championship in 1991, is a graduate of Walnut High. She played basketball at Cal State Fullerton and was a member of the U.S. National women’s handball team.

The ninth-annual Orange County All-Star water polo game is scheduled at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Tustin High. Servite’s Jim Sprague will coach the North and Corona del Mar’s John Vargas will coach the South. Tryouts are next week.

Three Orange County high school softball players have been invited to play on the U.S. team in the Junior World Cup tournament, June 23-30 in Normal, Ill.

Kelly Haukshurts, a sophomore outfielder from Westminster, Lindsey Collins, a sophomore outfielder/catcher from Fountain Valley, and Christa Saindon, a freshman infielder from Cypress, will be among 44 players at the tryouts.

La Habra senior Aimee Weathers is one of seven California high school players selected to Fast Pitch World magazine’s All-American and All-State rosters. Weathers, a shortstop who made only two errors in 90 chances last year at La Habra, batted .385 with a .631 slugging average and 30 runs batted in.
