COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Wins Twice, Reaches State Volleyball Final

Defending champion Golden West, led by Becca Foltz, won two matches Saturday to advance to today’s 5 p.m. final in the community college State volleyball tournament at DeAnza College in Cupertino. The other finalist will be determined today.

Foltz had 18 kills as Golden West (24-2) defeated Santa Monica, 15-10, 15-11, 15-12, in a quarterfinal. Foltz then had 16 kills, and Vanessa Dahl added 11 kills and 10 blocks as the Rustlers defeated Cerritos, 15-1, 15-4, 13-15, 15-3, in the semifinals.

In the final of the Grossmont men’s basketball tournament:

Rancho Santiago 102, Southwestern 68--Nick Holt, the tournament most valuable player, scored 27 points to lead Rancho Santiago (6-1) to a championship. Holt hit on six of eight three-point attempts to lead five Dons in double-figure scoring. Jon Surface had 17 points for Rancho Santiago.

At the Orange Coast tournament:

Son of the Blue Angels 98, Orange Coast 84--Damion Morbley scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds as Orange Coast took third. Troy Joseph scored 40 points, including eight of 11 three-pointers, for Son of the Blue Angels.

In the final of the Cypress women’s basketball tournament:

Ventura 69, Cypress 53--Sara Works scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds for Cypress (7-3). Works was named to the all-tournament team.

Ventura improved to 6-1.

In the final of the Cuesta tournament:

Cuesta 69, Orange Coast 57--Jamie Shine scored 17 points and America Robledo added 16 for Orange Coast (9-2). The Pirates hurt themselves by making only five of 16 free throws.

In a College of the Sequoias tournament consolation game:

Golden West 82, College of the Canyons 70--Julie Murdent scored 30 points and had 12 rebounds for Golden West (8-3).
