SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Julie Ruckriegel of the De Anza College women’s soccer team scored 1 minute and 10 seconds into a match against Moorpark College Saturday, setting the tone for a 5-0 victory over the Raiders in the semifinals of the state playoffs at Cosumnes River College.

Playing on a soggy, puddle-filled field, De Anza took a 2-0 lead on a penalty kick by Rebecca Jimenez that beat Moorpark goalkeeper Amy Fisher into the high left corner.

Stacie Savage scored another goal for the defending state champion less than a minute into the second half.

That type of offensive pressure had Fisher stymied.

“I just kind of looked, and there they were,” she said of the two quick goals. “They just opened up with a vengeance and really wanted it.”

Moorpark, which finished 10-4-4, threatened to score only once against the Dons (17-1-1).

In the closing minutes of the first half, the Raiders moved the ball to the front of the De Anza goal, where three players tried to knock it in. None, however, were able to get off a clean shot.

De Anza’s defense was as aggressive as its offense. Throughout the match, the Dons kept the Raiders from stringing together passes or making clean advances with the ball.

The loss ended a season that saw Moorpark make its best run at the playoffs since beating De Anza for the state championship in 1991.

The Raiders, who finished at 3-6-3 in the Western State Conference last season, advanced to the semifinals by beating previously undefeated Cypress, 3-2, on penalty kicks.

“(The team) did a great job and I’m really proud of them,” first-year Coach Ken Dale said.

“We came a long way this year,” fullback Mariah Ventre said. “We made it to the state championships and we proved ourselves.

“We played with a lot of heart, and that is why we got here in the first place.”

De Anza advances to face Santa Rosa, a 2-0 winner over Bakersfield, in today’s title game.
