SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Dorsey High’s Kendra Segura, in an attempt to repeat as City girls’ singles tennis champion, could not overcome the effects of a slight cold as she fell to second-seeded Julie Feldman of Taft, 6-4, 6-0, Friday at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

In the first set, Segura, a sophomore, fell behind 4-1, but won three of the next four games. Utilizing her strong serve, Feldman won the next game to win the set.

In the next set, Feldman gained the upper hand with a variety of passing shots to wear Segura down. She broke Segura’s service three times in each set.

“I beat myself out there today,” said Segura, who suffered her first high school career defeat in singles. I made so many unforced errors. My feet weren’t moving and my mechanics weren’t with me.”

Feldman finished with a three-year record of 48-2, the losses coming to former teammate Brahna Pastorini in the 1992 final and Segura in the 1993 semifinals. The only challenge left for Feldman was to win the crown.

“It feels very good,” Feldman said. “I wanted it really bad. I’ve been wanting to win this for the last three years. I have a lot of aspirations in tennis, and this is one step toward what I want to accomplish.”

In the third-place game, Los Angeles’ Ilona Kordonskay beat Dorsey’s Delana Daniels, 6-3, 6-3.

Segura advanced to the finals Wednesday after beating Daniels, 6-4, 6-2, after trailing, 4-3, in the first set. Feldman beat Kordonskay, 6-3, 6-4.

“We’re proud of both Kendra and Delana,” Dorsey Coach Dave Gordon said. “They had a great season.”
