Los Alamitos point guard Ali Ton and his teammates made a statement in a 60-47 victory over Los Angeles Dorsey in the first round of the Tournament of Champions boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday night at Ocean View High.

Ton had 17 points, 11 assists and six steals to help the Griffins (6-1) break open a close game by outscoring Dorsey, 21-9, in the fourth quarter. Los Alamitos plays the winner of the Tustin-Pasadena game in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

“That’s the best we’ve played all season,” Los Alamitos Coach Steve Brooks said. “I have all the confidence in the world in Ali. I think he’s the best set-up point guard in the area. He took control of the game.”

Ton did most of his set-up work for 6-foot-7 center Jeremy Vandervoet and Cory Johnson.

Vandervoet finished with 17 points. He benefited from numerous assists when Ton drove down the lane and dished off to his center for layups.

When Dorsey tried to pressure the Griffins, Ton and guard Chris Glass knifed through the press in the fourth quarter and Johnson made the Dons pay.

Johnson made four three-pointers in the final quarter, finishing with 17 points, to help put away the game.

“I was pleased with the effort tonight,” Brooks said. “But it’s just one game.”

Los Alamitos has lost only one game this season--a 56-39 defeat Dec. 7 against Mater Dei, the No. 1-ranked team in the state.

Dorsey (1-1), ranked in the state preseason top 20, was led by Charles Johnson’s 13 points and six rebounds.
