Sports : La Mirada, Montebello Players Dominate Southeast All-Stars : Football: Each school lands five players on The Times’ 1994 team. Santa Fe and St. Paul each have three selections.

Call it a tale of two cities with a happy ending.

La Mirada High repeated as Suburban League champion and Montebello won a share of its second consecutive Almont League title.

La Mirada (13-1) waltzed its way through its first undefeated regular season in 10 years. The Matadores outscored their five league opponents, 196-44, giving up only one touchdown in their first four league games and reached the Southern Section final for the second time in three years.

The Matadores, who entered the Division VIII playoffs as the top-seeded team for the second year in a row, lost to Bloomington, 48-32, Friday.

Montebello (10-2) went undefeated in Almont League play, culminating the regular season with a 42-0 victory over previously unbeaten Alhambra. The Oilers advanced to the Division III quarterfinals for the second year in a row, losing to eventual finalist Ayala.

La Mirada and Montebello have placed five players each on The Times’ 1994 Southeast All-Star football team.

Santa Fe (7-4), which won a share of its second consecutive Del Rio League title, and St. Paul (7-3), which opened the season with six victories in a row, are represented by three players each. Two players from Schurr and La Serna were chosen.

Selections were based on ballots cast by area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate, and a poll of Times sportswriters.

Fred Montiel of Montebello and James Sherman of Whittier were named the back and lineman of the year and John Mele of La Mirada was honored as coach of the year at an awards brunch Sunday at the Cerritos Sheraton.

A look at the all-stars:

OFFENSE

Wyatt Boatright, La Mirada, receiver--The 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior led the Matadores with 68 catches for 960 yards. He had nine touchdowns, including the game-winning reception in the final minute of La Mirada’s 38-35 victory over Artesia to secure the Suburban League title in the regular-season finale.

Guillermo Calderon, Montebello, receiver--Calderon was an All-Almont League selection at receiver and defensive back. The 5-7, 170-pound senior led the Oilers with 29 receptions for 655 yards and nine touchdowns. He had 24 tackles, 19 assists and three sacks on defense.

Andy George, La Serna, receiver--George, the Del Rio League receiver of the year, had 52 receptions for 812 yards and six touchdowns. The 6-2, 175-pound senior has caught more than 100 passes over the past two seasons.

Eric Aguilar, El Rancho, lineman--The Dons’ top blocker, the 6-1, 225-pound Aguilar had an 80% efficiency rating when El Rancho ran the ball to the senior’s side.

Dennis Cash, St. Paul, lineman--A top-notch blocker, the 6-foot, 243-pound senior was selected the All-Del Rey League the past two years.

Jason Munoz, Montebello, lineman--The 6-foot, 215-pound senior was a two-way player for the Oilers. On defense, he batted down two passes, had 11 solo tackles and 43 assists.

James Sherman, Whittier, lineman--Nicknamed the “Sherminator” by teammates, the 6-4, 290-pound senior tackle was selected to the The Times’ Southeast team for the second year in a row. The Del Rio League lineman of the year can bench-press 430 pounds and has attracted scholarship interest from UCLA, USC, Washington, Colorado and Texas.

David Baruch, California, back--A two-way player at quarterback and safety, Baruch was the only Del Rio League player to be named to the all-league team on offense and defense. The 6-2, 192-pound senior is being recruited by UCLA and Arizona.

Geoff Berg, Santa Fe, back--Berg, the Del Rio League most valuable player, was a two-way starter at quarterback and strong safety. The 5-9, 170-pound senior completed 75 of 150 passes for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense, he had 68 tackles and three interceptions. Berg also had four fumble recoveries, returning two for touchdowns.

Fred Montiel, Montebello, back--Montiel made The Times’ Southeast team on defense last season. The Almont League’s most valuable player saw action at quarterback, outside linebacker and punter. The 6-1, 185-pound senior completed 62 of 129 passes for 10 touchdowns. He also rushed for 479 yards in 74 carries and eight touchdowns. On defense, he led the Oilers with 39 tackles and 48 assists.

Mike Palumbo, La Mirada, back--The senior quarterback demonstrated great efficiency. The 6-0, 180-pound Palumbo completed 172 of 277 passes for 2,145 yards and 22 touchdowns despite being taken out by the third quarter of most of the Matadores’ regular-season games.

Kevin Seto, Schurr, kicker--The senior punter averaged 43.6 yards a kick. The 6-4, 205-pound Seto also played quarterback, where he completed 84 of 164 passes for 1,296 yards and 10 touchdowns.

DEFENSE

John Dyer, St. Paul, lineman--The 6-3, 237-pound senior tackle had 42 tackles and five sacks. The first-team Del Rey League player also knocked down five passes and had a fumble recovery.

Jorge Figueroa, Santa Fe, lineman--The 5-8, 240-pound Sanchez was the Del Rio League defensive lineman of the year. The senior, who bench-presses 400 pounds, had 70 tackles and 11 sacks.

Jesus Sanchez, Santa Fe, back--Sanchez, the Del Rio League most valuable defensive back, deflected 12 passes and intercepted three. The 5-8, 160-pound senior blocked four extra-point attempts and three punts.

Donnie Gunritz, La Serna, lineman--Gunritz is a two-time Times’ Southeast and Del Rio League first-team selection. The 6-foot, 210-pound senior had 114 tackles and 73 assists to go along with a blocked punt, five batted passes, three sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Sean Nicolini, La Mirada, lineman--The 5-11, 180-pound senior had 88 tackles, four sacks and five fumble recoveries. Nicolini, who blocked three punts, blocked a field goal to help preserve La Mirada’s 7-6 victory over Norte Vista in the Division VIII semifinals.

Siuta Taufa, La Mirada, lineman--The 6-1, 220-pound senior had 62 tackles, four sacks and three fumble recoveries to anchor the Matadores’ line. The Suburban League defensive lineman of the year, he blocked two punts in a Suburban League game against Norwalk, returning one for a touchdown and the other resulting in a safety.

Oscar Burgueno, Schurr, linebacker--The 6-2, 235-pound senior was a two-time Almont League first-team selection. Burgueno had a hand in 96 tackles, 36 solo and 31 assisted.

Brett Darnell, La Mirada, linebacker--The 6-1, 225-pound senior was the Suburban League defensive back of the year. He had 89 tackles, six sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions in helping the Matadores to two Division VII playoff appearances in three years.

Richard Enriquez, Montebello, linebacker--An Almont League first-team selection as a junior and a senior, Enriquez had 25 tackles and 49 assists. The 5-9, 180-pound Enriquez also had five sacks, four quarterback hurries and broke up three passes.

Art Lucero, St. Paul, linebacker--An All-Del Rey League first-team selection, Lucero was where the action was. The 5-11, 206-pound senior led the Swordsmen with 53 tackles and five knocked-down passes. He also intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.

Adolph Esqueda, Montebello, back--A two-way player as a defensive back and running back, Esqueda had 20 tackles and 24 assists. On offense, the 5-8, 185-pound senior led the team in scoring with 66 points. Esqueda rushed for 678 yards in 108 carries, an average of 6.3 yards, and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 19 passes for 226 yards and a score.

Jesus Sanchez, Santa Fe, back--The 5-8, 160-pound senior, who was named the Del Rio League defensive back of the year, blocked four extra-point attempts, three punts and a field goal. He also had three interceptions and deflected 12 passes.
