ROUNDUP : Marauders Surge, Beat Sequoias

Antelope Valley College basketball player Orville Turner scored 34 points to lead the Marauders to an 84-75 upset of fifth-ranked College of Sequoias in the championship game of the Sequoias tournament Saturday at Visalia.

Turner was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Antelope Valley’s Troy Coutee, who scored 17 points, and Brandon McIntire, who scored 11, also made the all-tournament team.

In other men’s basketball:

Long Beach 106, Canyons 76--Kwesi Fulton had 17 points and Marrcel Crain added 15 for Canyons (5-7) in the championship game of the Cypress tournament.

Pete Sverkos scored 17 points for Long Beach (14-3) and earned most valuable player honors.

Cuesta 86, Valley 61--Jarrett Wendt scored 23 points to lead Cuesta to third place in the Crown City tournament.

Vernard Harris scored 13 points for Valley (10-5). Vernon Simmons added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Imperial Valley 72, Moorpark 68--Chris Turner scored 24 points for Imperial Valley in a nonconference game at Moorpark. Paul Foster scored 21 for Moorpark.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 105, Moorpark 52--The Cougars spoiled the coaching debut of Moorpark’s Remy McCarthy in a Western State Conference game at Canyons.

Stephanie Labor scored 19 points for Canyons (10-2), ranked 13th in the state. Rebekah Cunnan scored 18 points, and Cathy Noriega scored 13 points to go with 14 assists.

Jennifer Oriza scored 27 points for Moorpark (1-9).

Valley 68, Southwestern 65--Erica Kusek scored 13 points and Yvonne Zandi scored 10 and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Monarchs (9-3) in a semifinal of the Orange Coast tournament. Valley, ranked 11th in Southern California, will face Chaffey in the championship game at 4 p.m. today.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Redlands 73, Burbank 58--Junior center Don Allado had 17 points and Carlos Baker added 14 coming off of the bench as the Bulldogs (5-6) fell in the Consolation.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Alemany 92, Burbank 10--The Indians rolled in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament. Kathy Reith led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Indians (5-0), ranked second in the state.

Village Christian 61, Mission Prep 44-- Trisha Palmquist scored a career-high 33 points--two shy of the school record--and had 15 rebounds and five steals for Village Christian (8-2), which held the 1994 Division V champions to 16 points in the second half. Lindy James added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Notre Dame 43, Burroughs 26--Ashly Ritter had 13 points off of the bench to lead Notre Dame (7-2) to third place in the Burroughs tournament.

Stacey Phillips had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Knights.

Chaminade 47, Hart 45--Shawnte Mitchell scored 14 points to lead the Eagles (6-3) in the first round of the Simi Valley tournament at the Rancho Santa Susana Community Center. Wendy Downen led the Indians (3-3) with 14 points.

Oak Park 70, L.A. Baptist 37--Natalie Davis had 25 points, 11 rebounds and four steals for Oak Park (6-3) in the consolation final of the Santa Paula tournament.

MEN’S SOCCER

Westlake High’s Josh Legere defeated Nick Walton of Temecula Valley, 12-10 in overtime, to take first place in the 171-pound class at the West Coast Classic in Rosemead.

The Warriors finished 11th in the 35-team tournament with 72 1/2 points, one-half point ahead of Ventura. Harvard-Westlake took 13th with 63 1/2 points.

Temecula Valley won the two-day affair with as final score of 171 points.
